Six gamblers jailed in Sirajganj
SIRAJGANJ: A mobile court here sentenced six gamblers to six-month imprisonment each in Raiganj upazila on Tuesday. The convicts are Sajib uddin Talukdar, 33, son of Sujabat Ali Talukdar of Gopalpur village, Masud Rana, 27, son of Abdul Khalek of Rupkhara village, Jakir Hossain, 26, son of Joynal of Gotitha village, Afsar Ali, 55, son of Insaf Ali of Sreerampur village, Shafiqul Islam, 38, son of Sarkar of Nimgacchi village, Abdul Hannan, 37, son of Iman Ali of Bhuiyat village in the upazila. Tipped off, a team of Rab-12 conducted a drive in the area and arrested six people while they were gambling on Monday night. Later, they were produced before the court of Executive Magistrate Nusrat Azmeri Haq, also Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Raiganj Upazila, reports UNB.
Two sweetmeat shops fined in Jhenidah
JEHNIDAH: The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection on Wednesday fined Tk 20,000 to each of two sweetmeat shops for preparing and preservation of sweetmeats in an unhygienic environment in Goalpara bazar in Sadar upazila. A mobile court led by Suchandan Mandal, assistant director of Jhenidah Consumer Rights Protection Department, conducted a drive at ‘Ashirwad Mishti’ and ‘Sweet Mishit’ shops in the afternoon and fined Tk 20,000 for selling rotten sweets and producing sweets in an unhygienic way. The court also urged all other businessmen to follow the Consumer Rights Protection Act, reports UNB.
Female ‘drug trader’ held with Yaba in Khulna
KHULNA: Members of Narcotics Control Department arrested a suspected female drug trader along with 7,500 Yaba tablets from Raipura area under Labanchara thana of the city on Sunday night. The arrestee was identified as Surma Begum, 32, wife of Selim Gazi,a resident of the area.
Rasheduzzaman, deputy director of the Department, said a team arrested suspected drug trader Milon Mollick from Mirzapur area in the evening along with 100 Yaba tablets.Following his information, the team raided the house of Surma around 9:30pm and arrested her along with the Yaba tablets worth Tk 31 lakh, reports UNB.
2 held with fake notes in Natore
NATORE: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive arrested two men along with counterfeit notes worth around Tk 4.40 lakh in Singra municipality area recently. The arrestees are Samad Mollah and Kisman Sarker, residents of Agpara area. Major Sibli Mostafa, camp commander of Rab-5, said Samad and Kisman gave the money to rice trader Kanchan Paul for business purpose. On suspicion, Kanchan informed the matter to the municipality mayor.Later, the mayor called the accused at his office and informed the matter to Rab members. A team of the elite force arrested them from mayor’s office, said the RAB official, reports UNB.
Farmers get jute fibre extraction machines in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA: A total of 22 entrepreneurs of three upazilas in the district got Aashkols (Jute fibre extraction machines) from RDRS Bangladesh today to ensure the quality of the jute fibre to earn fair prices against the output. A simple function was also held at the conference room of Gaibandha Govt. Technical Training Center (GGTTC) at Farazipara, an outskirt of the district town, on Wednesday noon with programme manager of RDRS Bangladesh Porsia Rahman in the chair. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal addressed the function as the chief guest and Principal of GGTTC M. Atiqur, Sadar upazila agriculture officer AKM Sadiqul Islam and chief inspector of jute here Mokbul Hossain were present at the event as the special guests while regional manager of Practical Action Bangladesh Nehal Azmat Mohi was the moderator., reports BSS.
