Two jute godowns catch fire in Jashore
JASHORE: A fire broke out at two godowns of a jute mill in Nawapara of Abhaynagar upazila in the district on Wednesday afternoon around 3 pm. Around 3.5 lakh bales of raw jute worth around Tk 20.5 crore from two godowns of Akij Jute Mills Itd established on 241 acres of land, were gutted in the fire, claimed Mamudunabi, manager of Akij Jute Mills. On information, five firefighting units from Monirampur, Jessore Sadar, Khulna, Khalispur and Nawapara stations rushed to the spot and started working to douse the fire, said Senior Station Officer Taraq Mahmud from Khulna Fire Service Station. The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately, reports UNB.
Worker electrocuted in Panchagarh
PANCHAGARH: A construction worker was killed after being electrocuted at Shahbahan in Tentulia upazila on Wednesday. Quoting witnesses, Zahurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tetulia Model Police Station, said Azharul Islam, 20, son of Surul Ali of Dargashing area in the upazila, came in contact with live electric wire while working at a local school in the afternoon, leaving him dead on the spot, reports UNB.
Man jailed for 5 years for selling fake US dollars
PIROJPUR: A court here on Tuesday sentenced a man to five years jail for selling fake US dollars at Tuskhali village of Mathbaria upazila in 2015. The condemned convict is Selim Hawladar , son of late Majid Hawladar of the same village.The court also fined the convict Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer six months more imprisonment. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police led by sub-inspector Iqbal of Mathbaria Police Station, arrested Selim along with 10 notes of 100 US dollar from Tuskhali Bazar of the upazila on February 21, 2015. Later, a case was filed in this connection. After examining the documents and seven witnesses, District and Sessions Judge Rafiqul Islam handed down the verdict, reports UNB.
Training for Hajj pilgrims held in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A daylong introductory meeting and training course for the Hajj pilgrims was held at divisional office conference hall of Islamic Foundation (IF) here on Monday. Divisional and District Offices of IF jointly organised the training. A total of 309 hajj pilgrims both male and female joined the training. With government arrangement, they will perform the holy religious ritual in Saudi Arabia this year from all over the district. Chaired by IF Divisional Director Hafez Ahmed, the training was addressed, among others, by Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader, IF Trainer Shamsul Haque, Civil Surgeon Office’s Medical Officer Dr Kamrul Hassan, Imam of Hatem Khan Boro Mosque Mufti Yeakub Ali and IF Field Officer Humayun Kabir. Mufti Yeakub Ali took part as the main discussant, conducted the training course and delivered the keynote speech on ‘Arkan’ and ‘Ahkam’ for performing Hajj correctly in the holy city of Mecca. He also narrated his own experiences while conducting Hajj in recent years, reports BSS.
Teesta inundates 10 Nilphamari villages
NILPHAMARI: Ten villages in Dimla upazila were inundated as the Teesta River swelled following onrush from the upstream, leaving over 10,000 people marooned. Sources at the local Water Development Board office said the river was flowing 9cm above the danger level. The gushing water of the river submerged villages, including Kharibari, Paglachar, Jharshingha, Latibari, Charkharibari, Khalishachapni, Kharkhalichapani, Bagherchar, Charbagherchar and Satnai, under three unions of the upazila, said Nilphamari-1 MP Aftab Uddin Sarker. He said the victims took shelter in the dam along the Teesta River, reports UNB.
