One killed, 11 hurt in Cumilla road crash

CUMILLA : One person was killed and 11 others were seriously injured in a road crash at Amirabad area in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla on Dhaka-Chattogram highway around 1 pm on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Jewel Kumar Prodhan, a BangladeshJatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist. The in-charge of Gouripur Police outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdun Nur said the accident took place while a microbus and two motorcycles of a motorcade of BNP standing committee member and former minister Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain were hit by a Dhaka-bound passenger bus. Mosharraf, who was going to attend a wedding programme at Muhammadpur area of the upazila, was unhurt. The SI said eight among the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital and the three others were in local hospital, reports UNB.

AL factional clash kills 1

HABIGANJ: A former Awami League leader’s son was killed in a clash between two factions of local Awami League at Ajmiriganj in the district on Monday. The deceased was identified as Al Amin, son of Atar Ali Mia, former Upazila Chairman and upazila Awami League General Secretary. Locals said after the death of Atar Ali Mia in April 30, the post of upazila chairman was declared vacant by the Election Commission. An extended meeting was held over the nomination for the post chaired by Upazila President Misbah Uddin Bhuiyan. During the meeting for nomination, a fierce clash ensued between the supporters following the dispute between Misbah and Al Amin leaving Al Amin dead on the spot. On information, police rushed to the village and brought the situation under control. Later, Al Amin’s body was sent to upazila health complex, reports UNB.

Fugitive convict held in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI : Police arrested a fugitive death-row convict of Gazipur from Narsingdi Sadar early yesterday . The arrestee was identified as Abdul Samad, son of Kuddus Mia alias Elach Khude Newaz of Bahadursadi village in Kaliganj upazila. He was a death-row convict in the Billa Hossain alias Bilu murder case as well as wanted in several other cases, said Abu Bakar Mia, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station. Acting on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Samad around 3 am. Later on Wednesday, he was sent to jail, said the OC. On December 7, 1995, Billa Hossain alias Bilu was killed over stealing a bottle gourd at Ishwarpur Bazar in the upazila. A case was filed against ten people. On October 5, 1997, police submitted the charge sheet accusing 13 people. Recently, Gazipur Additional District and Session Judge Fazle Elahi sentenced 13 people to death in the case and fined Tk 10,000 each. Of the convict, six people including Samad tried in absentia, reports UNB.

Educational institutions get development in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI: Infrastructure development of 21 high schools in Rajshahi city will start from this month. New academic buildings of 11 of those will be constructed and vertical extension of the rest institutions will be done. Thereby, overall development programmes in the city’s schools will be implemented. Meanwhile, educational institutes in the metropolis have started getting a new look amidst massive infrastructure developments during last five years. Mijanur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Education Engineering Department (EED), said works on 182 out of total 254 schemes were completed and works on the rest 72 are progressing fast. In the past, works on the educational institutions were only renovation- based. Now, multi-storied buildings are being constructed to modernize the institutions. “We are constructing necessary infrastructure at selected private colleges in order to ensure quality education with assistance of information and communication technology,” said Mijanur Rahman. Necessary infrastructure development works on 10 selected non-government secondary schools and nine colleges were completed with the main thrust of bringing quality development in education, reports BSS.
