N’ganj man ‘commits suicide’ after failing to pay debts
NARAYANGANJ: A garment factory owner committed suicide in Fatullah area of the district on Saturday, after failing to pay a large amount of debt. The deceased was identified as Abdul Matin, 47, son of late Abdul Jalil of Daulatpur in Kushtia. Matin hanged himself with the ceiling fan of his room at Majdair Pakapool area around 10 am, said Sorfuddin Ahmed, additional superintendent of the district police. Police recovered a suicide note from his room, he said. In the note, he wrote about his frustration over the failure of paying the debts worth of Taka two and half crore, he added. The body was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy, reports UNB.
Mymensingh cop held for ‘Yaba trading’
MYMENSINGH: Detectives arrested a constable of Mymensingh Court on Saturday night for his alleged involvement in drug trading. The arrestee was identified as Constable Al Amin. Ashiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of district police said that police arrested suspected drug trader Motaleb on Friday noon along with 12,000 pieces of Yaba tablets. In primary interrogation, Motaleb said that he received the tablets from Constable Al Amin. Later on Saturday night, a team of DB police arrested Al Amin from the court premises. Meanwhile, Inspector Kamruzzaman and two sub-inspectors Saiful Islam and Monir Hossain of the court were withdrawn to the district police lines in connection with arrest incident, said SA Newazi, additional superintendent of Mymensingh police. The three policemen of the court were closed following arrest of Constable Al Amin in drug trading case. Besides, a case against Al Amin and Motaleb was filed with Kotwali Police station, reports UNB.
Fire guts 3 shops in Sylhet

A devastating fire gutted three commercial printing shops in the Sylhet city on Saturday morning. Local traders called the fire fighters at around 7:15am after seeing smoke drifted from inside RR Printers at Muktijoddha Gali of Zindabazar area. They said the fire engulfed two more shops-Sumaiya Printing Press and Tamiz Offset Press-immediately after it ensued from the RR Printers. Three fire trucks rushed to the spot at about 6:30am and doused the flame at about 8:30am after one-hour effort, but the production materials and equipment of the presses were damaged, the fire fighters said. Fire service deputy director Rafiqul Islam said it took times to douse the fire as there were huge inflammable goods in the shops including papers and other printing materials. The fire might have originated from a short circuit, he told following a primary investigation. The businesses sustained losses of about Tk 40 lakh, he said.
Youth held for violating girl in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: Police arrested a young man from Katakhali Bazar in the city on Monday night in a case filed over the rape of a girl. The arrestee was identified as Mushfiq Ahmmed Shah Newaj, 22, son of Shah Jamal Haque of the area. Mahedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Katakhali Police Station, said the victim filed the case accusing Mushfiq and his parents on Monday. According to the case statement, Mushfiq had a love affair with the girl. On Sunday night, the accused called the girl over phone to come to his house saying that his mother Monjuara Khatun was ill. When the girl went there, Mushfiq’s parent went out from house. Later, Mushfiq violated the girl.Returning back to her house, the girl informed her family and later filed a complaint with the police station.Later, police in a drive arrested Mushfiq, said the OC. Besides, the girl was admitted to the one stop crisis centre (OCC) at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, reports UNB.
