Assad will visit North Korea

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said he plans to visit North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, North Korean state media reported on Sunday, potentially the first meeting between Kim and another head of state in Pyongyang.
“I am going to visit the DPRK and meet HE Kim Jong Un,” Assad said on May 30, North Korea’s KCNA news agency reported, using the initials of the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Israel, Palestinian exchange fire
in Gaza

Israeli aircraft pounded 10 militant targets in Gaza in response to Palestinian projectile fire, its army said Sunday, shattering a ceasefire reached just days ago after the worst flare-up since a 2014 war.
The latest escalation came hours after thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of a young female volunteer medic killed by Israeli fire in violence on the border in southern Gaza.

Cattle rustlers kill 23 in Nigeria

Cattle thieves have killed 23 people in northern Nigeria’s Zamfara state which has been battling cattle rustling and kidnapping in recent months, a local government official said late Saturday.
Armed bandits on motorcycles invaded Zanoka village in the state on Friday, opening fire on residents and burning homes, said Mustapha Muhammad, the chairman of the local government area.

Mexican city council
candidate slain

A woman running for a city council position in southern Mexico was shot dead early Saturday, less than a month before elections, authorities said.
Pamela Teran, a candidate from the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Juchitan in Oaxaca state, was killed along with photographer Maria del Sol Cruz and another person as they left a restaurant.
Her father is Juan Teran, identified as a drug cartel leader in her area. He has been jailed since 2017 on organized crime charges.
