Pak parties fail to name caretaker PM

PTI, Islamabad

Pakistan’s ruling party PML-N and the opposition on Saturday failed to appoint a caretaker Prime Minister until the formation of a new government after the general elections in July.
The term of the current government will expire on May 31 and the new government will be formed within 60 days. During this period a neutral government having bipartisan support is set up, according to the law.

9 dead in Brazil juvenile jail riot

Nine juvenile detainees died Friday during a fire that was started when inmates lit a mattress during a riot, authorities said Friday.
The facility, located in the city of Goiania, is used to temporarily hold minors between the ages of 13 and 17. The riot followed an attempt by administrators to move some of the detainees from one cell to another, said Gilles Sebastian Gomes.

Venezuela releases 20 political prisoners

The Venezuelan government freed 20 jailed activists Friday who opponents of the socialist administration considered political prisoners, human rights advocates said.
Officials arrested them earlier this year while protesting power outages, said Laura Valbuena, a lawyer with the rights group Foro Penal.

4 militants killed in Kashmir fighting

At least four suspected militants were killed in a gunbattle with government troops Saturday after crossing into the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir from the Pakistani side of the disputed territory, the Indian military said.
Fighting began early Saturday when soldiers intercepted heavily armed insurgents along the highly militarized de facto border that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan, said Col. Rajesh Kalia, an Indian army spokesman.

Turkey detains 51 ISIS members

Turkish police detained 51 suspected members of ISIS in Istanbul on Friday, anti-terrorist police said.
The suspects were believed to be planning to travel back to conflict zones in Syria, they said in a statement, adding that all those detained were foreign nationals. ISIS has carried out numerous bombings across Turkey in recent years, including an attack on a nightclub in Istanbul on Jan. 1, 2017, in which 39 people were killed and a bombing in the city’s historic heart that killed 12 in 2016.

Massachusetts judge resigns

A Massachusetts judge who admitted to engaging in repeated sexual encounters including in his courthouse with a social worker announced his resignation on Friday, a day after the state’s top court suspended him indefinitely. Judge Thomas Estes submitted his resignation letter after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on Thursday ruled that his “grave, willful and repeated wrongdoing.
