Milad, Doa Mahfil held in Sylhet

Bangladesh Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh HasinaÕs home-coming day was observed yesterday by both AL Sylhet District and City Units jointly through holding Milad and Dua Mahfil at the Mosque of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) Majar (holy shrine) in Sylhet City after Jhuhr (afternoon) prayer. The organisation observed the day commemorating Sheikh HasinaÕs home-coming on May 17th, 1981 after being exile for long days abroad.
In the congregation prominent among those who attended are central AL Organising Secretary Adv Misbah Uddin Siraj, Central Leader and former Sylhet City Mayor Badaruddin Ahmed Kamran , District AL Secretary and former MP Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury ,Vice-President and Sylhet Sadar Upazila Chairman Asfaq Ahmed, Joint Secretaries Adv Nasiruddin Khan ,Humayun Islam Kamal, Muhammad Ali Dulal, Advocte Khukon Kumar Dutta, District AL Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Arman Ahmed Shiplu, South Surma Upazila AL Secretary Freedom Fighter Hazi Rois Ali, District AL Deputy Publicity Assistant Secretary Mustaq Ahmed Polash, District Sramik League General Secretary Shamim Rashid Chowdhury, City Jubo League Convener Alam Khan Mukti and others.
Green Line-3 collides with sand laden bulkhead on Meghna River

At least four panicked passengers sustained minor injuries after their carrier water transport Green Line-3 plying on Dhaka-Barisal route collided with a sand laden bulkhead on Meghna River in open daylight on Friday morning. Return trip of the vessel of Friday afternoon from Barishal to Dhaka was declared as cancelled. Irani Tasfi Shifa, one of the passengers of Green Line-3 said, passengers became panicked when at 10.30 am Green Line reached at Matlab point near Chandpur river port on Meghna River, suddenly collided with a sand carrier bulkhead. Some of us sustained minor injuries in this accident, she claimed. However, Shamsul Arefin, Barishal Station Manager of Green Line, acknowledging the fact said Green Line-3 was carrying Barishal bound 272 passengers. In the incident the vessel sustained minor damages like scratch without any human loss or injury. Then the vessel anchored near a shoal for safety of the passengers and another vessel Green Line-2 sent to the spot from Dhaka. Evacuating the passengers of Green Line-3 and boarding them on Green Line-2, the trip to Barishal continued after 2:00 PM. Ajmol Huda Mithu, Deputy Director, Marine Safety and River Transportation of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) at Barishal Port, was not available for comment .
Iftar for Gaibandha orphan girls held
GAIBANDHA: On the first day of the Ramadan, the district administration arranged iftar and doa mahfil for the orphan girls of Govt. Shishu Paribar in Shukhnagar area of the town on Friday evening. Earlier, a discussion meeting was also held with additional district magistrate ABM Sadiqur Rahman in the chair. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal attended the function as the chief guest and his wife Mukti Basak was the special guest. Addressing the occasion, the DC said every Muslim should strive to achieve purification of soul through fasting during the holy month of Ramadan to lead an honest life throughout the year. Proper application of the teaching of Ramadan can establish peace, harmony, amity and discipline in national life alongside personal and family life through shunning envy, vengeance and conflict, he added. The DC also urged all to protect the sanctity of the month. Imam of Shukh-shantir Bazar Jame Mosque conducted the doa mahfil seeking blessings of Almighty Allah for continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country, reports BSS.
Lightning kills housewife in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: A housewife was killed after being hit by a thunderbolt in Fakrabad village of Assasuni upazila on Friday noon. The deceased was identified as Soshti Kundu, 35, wife of Shamal Kundu of the village. The incident occurred when a thunderbolt hit Soshti while she was collecting mangos near her house in the noon, leaving her dead on the spot, eyewitnesses said, reports UNB.
