Two persons sentenced to 6 months jail

Two persons were sentenced 6 months jail in a mobile court for drinking narcotic materials on Thursday afternoon in Baraigram upazila under Natore district. Convicted two persons were Babul Hossain (18) and Azahar Ali (60). Babul Hossain is a son of Sekender Ali and Azahar Ali is a son of Nur Ali of the village Atua under Baraigram upazila. Police arrested them from the village Atua and placed them in a mobile court. Then, Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Nirbahi Magistrate of the mobile court Md Anwar Pervez sentenced them six months jail each for drinking narcotic materials.

Authorities of Rajshahi University (RU) brought out joyous procession for successive launching of Bangabanhu Satellite-1 amid much enthusiasm yesterday. More than one thousand teachers, students from different departments, institutions, residential halls and other top officials of the university joined at the procession. The procession paraded main streets on the campus. After parading, it ended in front of the university’s Senate Bhaban. VC of RU Prof M Abdus Sobhan, Pro-VC Prof Ananda Kumar Saha, Public Relation Office Administrator Prof Provash Karmakar, Treasurer Prof Mostafizur Rahman, Proctor Prof Lutfar Rahman and Student Adviser Prof Zannatul Ferdous were also present on the occasion. Addressing the rally, VC Prof Abdus Sobhan said that the country has been developing in fields of education, health, science, technology and others. The trend of the development is still now ongoing. Even the country is ahead in different indexes internationally adding that we shall get lots of advantages for the successful launching of Bangabandhu Satellite-1.
Orientation meeting on RTI held in Barishal

With a view to create wider awareness on the Access to Right to Information (RTI), an orientation programme was jointly organised by Information Ministry and District Administration on Saturday afternoon at Barishal Aswini Kumar Hall. Mostly public servants, local government employees, peoples representative, development organization activists participated in the programme. Chief of the Commissioners to the RTI Commission, Mortuza Ahmed was chief guest of the programme presided over by Habibur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Barishal. Among others M M Ziaul Alam, cabinet secretary (coordination and reformation), Nepal Candra Sarkar, information commissioner, Shahiduzzaman, divisional commissioner, attended the programme as special guests. The guests and speakers expressed their optimism in the RTI act, especially as a tool in fulfilling justice to the poor and marginalised. Once upon a time it was said that ‘knowledge is power’ and now it was changed as ‘information is power’, they said. They reminded that after enacting the RTI act in 2009, more than 25 thousand appeal placed before the commission in last 8 years and about 95 percent of those proved as true. However it was not became popularly used method for both public and people used to be benefited.
