Indian tourist dies in Kashmir protest

An Indian tourist was killed during a stone-throwing protest in Kashmir, officials said Tuesday, as the disputed region shut down for a third day over the killings of civilians and rebels during weekend gunbattles and anti-India protests.
Meanwhile, a teenage boy who had been shot by Indian troops on Sunday died in a hospital, triggering protests and clashes in his southern Kashmir village.

18 killed in Rwanda flooding, landslides

A Rwandan official says at least 18 people have been killed in landslides and flooding in the country’s west. Jean Claude Twishime, spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees, said landslides killed 15 people in Karongi district. He said two more people were killed in flooding and another was struck by lightning on Monday.

US court blocks sending ‘IS fighter’ to third country

A US appeals court on Monday blocked the government’s plan to hand over to a third country an American citizen captured in Syria allegedly fighting for the Islamic State group.
In a two-to-one decision, a panel of judges at the US Court of Appeals in Washington left in place a lower court’s injunction preventing the man, a dual US-Saudi national, from being turned over by the US military to the Saudi government.

US slaps more sanctions on Venezuela

US Vice President Mike Pence on Monday urged Venezuela to suspend a divisive May 20 election he denounced as a “sham,” as Washington slapped fresh sanctions on Nicolas Maduro’s regime.
In an address to the Organization of American States, Pence slammed the upcoming presidential vote-boycotted by the opposition and branded illegitimate by much of the international community.

2 pilots killed in Russian copter crash

A Russian Ka-52 helicopter crashed in Syria, both pilots were killed, the Russian Defense Ministry told reporters on Monday.
“A Russian helicopter Ka-52 crashed while on a routine flight over eastern regions of the Syrian Arab Republic. Both pilots were killed,” it said.

11 militants killed in Afghanistan

At least 11 Taliban militants have been killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) they were making detonated accidently in Afghan province of Ghazni, a provincial government spokesman said Tuesday.
“The incident occurred in Guzara-e-Gilan village of Andar district on Monday afternoon. And those among the killed were several Taliban bomb-making experts,” spokesman Harif Noori told Xinhua.
