Minor siblings drown in Chandpur
CHANDPUR: Two minor siblings drowned in a pond at Tariaani village in Haziganj upazila on Saturday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Mahmuda Akhter, 8, and Kawsar Hossain, 9, daughter and son respectively of Md Yusuf Hossain of the village. Union Parishad Member Murad Hossain said Mahmuda fell into the pond while she was playing near it around 5pm, leading Kawsar to jump in to try and save his sister. Unfortunately he too drowned. Later, the family members found their bodies floating in the pond. Being informed, police were sent to the spot. Preparations for their burial would be taken in consultation with family members, said officer-in-charge of Haziganj Police Station Md Jabedul Islam, reports UNB.
Property donation for nationalisation of Saidpur College completed

As part of the process of nationalisation of the traditional and oldest Saidpur College of Nilphamari district, the donation of all the movable and immovable assets of the educational institution has been completed recently. The documents of the donation were performed in favour of the Secretary of the Department of Secondary and Higher Education. Teachers organised the donation ceremony. The donation letter has been signed by the President of the Governing Body of Saidpur College and member of the Nilphamari-4 Constituency Alhaj Md Shawkat Chowdhury and Principal (Acting) of Saidpur College Md. Sakhawat Hossain Khokon. Chairman of Saidpur Upazila, Moksedul Momin, General Secretary of the Awami League Akhtar Hossain Badal, Senior Vice President of Municipal Awami League Idris Ali, General Secretary Mozammel Haq along with Awami League and Associate Organisation leaders, former college Principal Alhaj Md. Afsar Hossain Miah, Principal Hafizur Rahman, eminent persons of the city, well-known journalists and all the members of the college governing body and teachers were present.
Boro rice procurement begins in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: Procurement of Boro rice has been started in the district with the main thrust of facilitating the farmers towards getting fair price of the newly harvested food grain. According to the official sources, the government has taken decision of procuring 6,571 tonnes of rice in the district and the decision has made the farmers happy. District Controller Office of Food has started the rice procurement with the main targets of ensuring value support to the farmers, keeping the market price of food grain to a reasonable rate, building food security stock and continuing the supply system of official food distribution. Noruttam Kumar Pramanik, information officer of Food Controller Office, here told BSS the procurement drive will continue till August 31. Rice will be procured from only the license holding millers at Taka 38 per kilograms in the district. Nurul Amin Siddiqui, a farmer of Paba upazila, said in previous years the procurement drive started after completing the harvest of Boro paddy. That’s why the farmers used to sell their paddy in fewer prices much before the start of procurement, he said, reports BSS.
