NARSINGDI: Police arrested a fugitive convict from Hazipur in Sadar upazila on Friday. The arrestee is Ershad, 32, a resident of Arshinagar area in Sadar upazila. Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge (operation) of Sadar Police Station, said tipped off, police arrested Ershad from the area in the morning. Ershad was sentenced to death in the sensational Ayub killing case. Ayub, was killed over sharing money of drug related business in July, 2012. On December 19, 2016, a court sentenced Ershad to death and two others to life term imprisonment in the case, reports UNB.
Youth held with 7300 Yaba pills in B’baria
BRAHMANBARIA: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a young man along with 7300 pieces of Yaba tablets from Shibnagar village in Akhaura upazila on Thursday. The arrestee is Selim Mia, 19, son of Mangal Mia of the village. Tipped off, a team of BGB from Colonel Bazar BGB camp, conducted a drive in the area and arrested Selim along with the Yaba pills. Later, he was handed over to police, reports UNB.
BRAC Vision Center inaugurated in Manoharganj

In order to make eye treatment available, BRAC has inaugurated the Vision Center by the private development organization at the Hayat Center in College Road at Manoharganj in Cumilla Sadar Upazila on Tuesday. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (Acting) and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Yasmin Akhter inaugurated the center , said a press release. Later, a discussion meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Bangladesh Blind Welfare Association, Cumilla District Unit General Secretary Dr. AKM Abdus Selim in the auditorium of the upazila parishad. Master Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, Awami League President, Kamal Hossain Bulu, Vice-Chairman, Dr. Md. Shahjahan Sarker, Health and Family Planning Officer of the Upazila, Senior Manager of BRAC Health, Nutrition and Population Programme, BM Jahidul Islam, Orbis International Project Co-ordinator Md. Parvez Hossain among others spoke in the programme and BRAC representative Vibhash Kishore Das addressed the welcome speech. Principal of Nilkanta Degree College, Abu Jamal Khan, Monoharganj Press Club Convener Md Humayun Kabir Manik, Area Manager of BRAC Vision Rahmat Ullah, Walton Show room Director GM Ahsan Ullah Sohag and BRAC Sector Specialist Ranju Chandra Saha and other officials were also present in the meeting.
Clean City Campaign launched in Rangpur
RANGPUR: The Clean City Campaign-2018 has begun here with a view to maintaining cleanliness in city areas, including office premises, institutions, homesteads and open places. Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa formally launched the campaign by cleaning a drain at Chartola Mour area on the College Road in Rangpur city yesterday, said a press release. Speaking on the occasion, Mostafa said sound health is the most important wealth and asked all city dwellers to maintain cleanliness to improve city environment and reduce the extent of diseases aiming to build a healthy and prosperous nation. RpCC chief executive officer Akhter Hossain Azad highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness at office premises, institutions, homesteads and open places in the city since cleanliness is a must to keep air fresh and improve environment. “All of the drains will be cleaned up, mosquitoes will be destroyed and saplings will be planted on the roadsides in the city during the campaign,” he said. City councilors Mahbubar Rahman and Harun Ar Rashid, RpCC superintending engineer Amdad Hossain, its executive engineer Azam Ali and conservancy inspector Aiyub Ali, among others, spoke on the occasion, reports BSS.
