3 Naval officers narrowly escaped accident

Brigadier Shaheen Aktar of Bangladesh Navy, his driver and 2 other high naval officials have narrowly escaped when their Pajero car (Bangladesh Navy -1921) collided head on with a speeding 3 wheeled mechanized mini truck (locally known as trolley) on Khulna-Mongla Highway near at Katkhali (Bede Pally) under Fakirhat Upazila in the district at about 12 am on Wednesday. Police said that the Pajero car carrying the high naval officials was going from Khulna to Mongla and when it reached the place of occurrence the mini truck that was coming from the opposite direction and from the wrong side violently dashed the car. As a result, the car was badly damaged including its both front wheels. But fortunately the car did not skid off the road and did not plunge into the road side 16 feet deep ditch. Consequently, the naval high officials narrowly escaped from inevitable death. Being informed of the matter a police squad led by Sergeant Aminul Islam of Katakhali Highway Police Station rushed to the spot, recovered the damaged Pajero car and seized the mini truck. But its driver managed to escape.
28th death anniv of Manoroma Basu observed

The 28th death anniversary of Manoroma Basu Masima, the legendary progressive political, human and female rights activist of southern region, observed on Thursday night in Barisal with due respect. A memorial meeting on this occasion to discuss life and achievements of Masima was held at the office of Manorama Basu Masima Memorial Trust at Matri-Mandir primary school founded by Masima in Kawnia Road area of the city in evening. Participants of the programme called to include life and achievement of Masima in syllabus of the educational curriculum. The programme was presided over by Nikhil Sen, president of the trust and addressed among others by Rabeya Khatun, Nigar Sultana Hanufa, Bswanath Das Munshi, Israt Jahan Popy, Reazul Islam Khokan, Badal Biswas, Sushanta Ghosh, Anowar Zahid, Tarun Chanda, Narayan Saha, and Nazrul Islam Chunnu. The speakers of the programme told Masima believing on works rather than words sacrificed her whole life for the welfare and advancement of the society in spite of the religious binding and superstitions.
Village police ‘kills self’ in Manikganj
MANIKGANJ: A village police allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at Khagrakhuri village in sadar upazila on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain Delu,56, son of late Nifazuddin. Sadar thana SI Ripon Bala said family members found his hanging body in the morning and informed police. Later , police recovered the body and sent it to sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. Delu had been suffering from various health problems and he had an operation for his vision problem two months back, he said quoting family members. As his physical condition did not improve he might have committed suicide out of frustration, he added, reports UNB.
Headmaster suspended for embezzlement in Benapole
BENAPOLE: The headmaster of a local high school at Putkhali village here was suspended on Thursday on charge of embezzling stipend money of two students with disabilities. The school managing committee took the decision at an emergency meeting on the day. Abdul Gaffar, chairman of Baropota United High School managing committee and chairman of Putkhali union parishad, said Ainuddin, the headmaster of the school, had misappropriated Tk30,500 meant for stipend of the two students with disabilities-Sumi Akter and Abdullah. When the irregularity came to light, the school authorities decided to suspend him. However, the headmaster returned the embezzled money to the students, added the managing committee chairman, reports UNB.
College student killed in road truck crash
PANCHAGARH: A college student was killed as a speeding truck knocked down him in Tetulia upazila on Thursday night. The victim was identified as Sohel Rana, 21, son of Sobed Ali, hailing from Padiagach (Khutagaj) village. He is an HSC student of Bhajanpur Degree College. Witnesses said a Panchagarh-bound speeding truck hit Sohel when he was crossing the Panchagarh-Tetulia road after taking tea from a nearby shop around 7.30pm, leaving him dead on the spot. Driver of the killer truck fled the scene just after the accident. Incensed, locals blocked the highway for an hour, reports UNB.
