Fruit bearing tree fair begins in Fulchhari
GAIBANDHA: A five-day fruit bearing tree fair began on the premises of Fulchhari upazila parishad here on Thursday afternoon. Upazila Agriculture Office arranged the fair with support from the local administration. Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah spoke at the inaugural session of the fair as the chief guest while deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) AKM Ruhul Amin and upazila parishad chairman M Habibur Rahman were present as special guests. Chaired by UNO Abdul Halim Tolstoy, the inaugural session was also addressed, by upazila agriculture officer M Asaduzzaman, Fulchhari union parishad chairman Abdul Gaffur and local Awami league leader M Shahidul Islam. The speakers stressed planting more fruit bearing saplings at homesteads and open spaces to protect environment from its degradation as well as cope with the adverse impacts of climate change. They said as the prices of all fruits are very costly, there is no alternative to producing local and indigenous fruits to meet the growing nutrition demand of people. Fazle Rabbi Miah urged all to come forward to create a social movement for planting trees in the district to get benefit economically and nutritionally. Terming tree an inseparable part of life and livelihood, he stressed the need for planting fruit bearing trees apart from medicinal ones, reports BSS.
14 furniture shops gutted in Khulna fire
KHULNA: At least 14 shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at a furniture market in West Rupsha area of the city early Friday. Locals said the fire ensued in a shop around 5am and soon spread to adjoining ones. On information, four firefighting units from Tutpara and Boyra Fire stations rushed in and brought the blaze under control around 7:20am, said Mamun, Senior Station Officer of Tutpara Fire Station. The fire might have originated from a mosquito coil, he said. The affected businessmen claimed that the extent of losses caused by the fire would exceed Tk 1.30 crore, reports UNB.
Laxmipur farmers hope bumper Okra production
LAXMIPUR: Okra cultivation in different parts of the district is becoming more popular day by day as the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) is expecting a total sale of Tk 30 crore this season. Okras from the district are being taken to different markets of Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and different other parts of the country. According to DAE, Okra was cultivated on 1,550 hectares of land in 5 upazilas of the district this season which is 500 hectares more than the last year. About 12 to 15 tons of Okra is produced on each hectare of land, said Belal Hossain Khan, Deputy Director of Laxmipur District Agricultural Extension Department.
The cost in Okra cultivation is comparably lower than other vegetables and it is a profitable crop as yield starts in 50 days of seed sowing, he added, reports UNB
