RUET bus driver killed on campus, case filed

 A murder case was filed with Motihar Police Station on early Tuesday over the killing of the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology bus driver Abdus Salam on Monday night in Rajshahi. Hasibul Islam Polash, elder son of the deceased filed the case with the police station accusing some unnamed persons, said Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of the police station. Some unidentified miscreants hacked Abdus Salam, 55, near Desrotna Sheikh Hasina Hall of the university on Monday night around 9:30pm while he was returning to his residence at the university staff’s quarter. The deceased wife Hasna Begum told The New Nation that their neighbor, who resides at the next quarter, found her husband, Abdus Salam, lying on the ground while he was returning to his quarter and informed them. Salam was rushed to Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital where on duty doctor declared him dead, said RMCH police camp’s in-charge assistant Sub-inspector Shafique Islam. Hasna Begum said that they had no family foe with anyone and had no knowledge about the killer, but said that local people attacked his elder son Hasibul Islam Polash four years earlier. OC Shahadat Hossain told New Nation that Polash filed an attempt to murder case with the police station against some local persons in 2014 where Abdus Salam was one of the witnesses. RUET VC Prof Mohd Rafiqul Alam Beg told The New Nation that they requested the law enforcers to take effective steps to arrest the perpetrators, adding that he already has set up light at the street lamps on campus.
Dialogue on capacity building in agriculture held in C’nawabganj

A policy dialogue on capacity building in innovation in agriculture sector was held in Chapainawabganj on Monday. It was arranged under a project titled ‘Increasing Innovative Capacity in Agriculture Sector’ of the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation’ (FAO) at Chapai Food Club in the town. Mango growers, regional mango-NIS arranged the programme. Chairman of BMDA Akram Hossain Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner of Chapainawabganj Md. Mahmudul Hasan, National Project Coordinator of NIS Dr. Baktiar Hossain, Project Manager of FAO, Bangladesh Dr. Nasrin Sultana, Consultant of CDAES Professor Dr. Julfikar Rahman, Principal Scientific Officer of Regional Horticulture Research Station Dr. Hamim Reza and Senior Scientific Officer of the same Dr. Shorof Uddin, Senior Executive Officer of National Bank Limited Rajshahi Moshiur Rahman, president of Shibganj Mango Association Omar Ali and secretary of the same Ismail Khan Shamim took part in the dialogue. 12 issues were identified in the dialogue including proper rules for exporting mangoes, signing deals between the mango growers and the exporters, shorting exportable mangoes, packing them and doing quarantine at the growers’ own areas, temporary appointment of a quarantine officer during the mango season, installing an office, reducing VAT on bag making raw materials and weighing related problems during harvest.
2 drug traders held with 8,600 Yaba pills  
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two suspected drug traders along with 8,600 pieces of Yaba tablets from Muradpur area of Nachole upazila on Monday night. The arrestees were identified as Alamin, 30, son of Rafiqul Islam and Selim Reza, 22, son of Saidur Rahman. Squadron leader Syed Abdullah Al Murad, camp commander of Rab-5, said that being tipped off, a team of Rab conducted drive around 8:45am and arrested the duo along with the Yaba pills worth Tk 25,80,000. A case was filed in this connection.
