Youth held with arms in C’nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive arrested a young man along with arms from Namochakpara border area in Shibganj upazila early Friday. The arrestee was identified as Mosarraf Hossain Babu, 24, son of Azizul Haque. Tipped off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive around 3:15 am and arrested Babu along with a pistol, six rounds of bullet and two magazines, said squadron leader Syed Abdullah Al Murad, camp commander of Rab-5.

Murder accused shot in Jessore

An accused in a murder case was shot and wounded in an attack by some rivals at Dakterpara village in Fulsara union in Chougacha Upazila on Thursday night. The injured was identified as Khairul Islam, 40, son of late Sardar Ali of the village and an accused in a case over killing ex-UP chairman Ashraful Alam alias Asha. Khairul was on bail in the case and has been working as a ward boy at Jessore Medical College Hospital. Likhon, son of the injured, said, four miscreants— Ismail, Iltulmis,Faruk, Zahir—opened fire on Khairul around 8.30 pm while he was returning home after saying his prayers at the mosque in the village, leaving him severely injured. The miscreants fled the scene immediately. Khairul sustained bullet in his abdomen and was sent to the Jessore Medical College Hospital, said officer-in-charge of Chougacha Police Station Shamim Uddin.

Khairul Alam Bhuiyan elected Haluaghat Mayor
MYMENSINGH: Awami League nominated candidate Khairul Alam Bhuiyan Khorrom has been elected unofficially as the mayor of newly constituted Haluaghat municipality polls in Mymensingh yesterday. Khorrom got 3,834 votes while his rival BNP nominated candidate Md Abdul Hamid secured 3,051 votes, said Zakir Hossain, upazila nirbahi officer of Haluaghat. Out of 14,427 voters, 11,219 exercised their right to franchise in the polls, sources said. The election was held peacefully at nine centres of nine wards of the municipality.

Truck driver killed in Mymensingh road crash
MYMENSINGH: A truck driver was killed and his two helpers were injured in a head-on collision between two trucks on Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road at Ramgopalpur in Gouripur upazila on Friday morning. The deceased could not be identified immediately. Delwar Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Gouripur Police Station, said the accident took place when a goods-laden truck hit another one around 5.45am, leaving the driver of one truck dead on the spot. The traffic on the road was disrupted following the accident, reports UNB.

12 houses gutted in Munshiganj fire
Munshiganj Correspondent:
Ten houses were gutted in a fire at Uttar Kusumpur village in Sirajdikhan upazila on Thursday night. The fire originated from the kitchen of a house around 11.30 pm and soon engulfed the adjoining houses, said Mohiuddin, chairman of Sirajdikhan upazila. Local people had brought the fire under control before fire service unit reached the spot. At least eight people were injured while the bringing fire under control. On information, upazila nirbahi officer Tanvir Mohammad Azim along with the chairman visited the spot and distributed corrugated iron sheets among the affected families.
