Nine killed as gunbattle rages in Kashmir

Nine people were killed in a gun battle between Indian soldiers and militants that raged into its second day at an Indian army camp in northern Jammu and Kashmir state, a police official said on Sunday.
Militants stormed the camp early on Saturday and hundreds of police, army and paramilitary soldiers were rushed in to dislodge the fighters, a home ministry official said in the capital, New Delhi.

Tanzania clamps down on cannabis

Tanzanian authorities have stepped up an escalating war on cannabis by destroying 14 hectares (35 acres) of the crop in the northern province of Arusha in recent days.
Saturday alone saw eight hectares laid waste at the Meru forest reserve following another six acres earlier in the week in operation overseen by Interior Minister Mwigulu Nchemba. Tanzania is one of the world’s largest cannabis producers.

Indonesia bus crash kills 27
AP, Jakarta
A packed tourist bus returning from an outing collided with a motorbike and plunged from a hill on Indonesia’s main island of Java after its brakes apparently malfunctioned, killing at least 27 people, police said Sunday.
At least 18 others were hospitalized with injuries, some in critical condition, following the crash Saturday on a winding slope in Subang in West Java province, said local police chief Muhammad Joni.

Egypt army kills 16 jihadists

Egypt’s army said Sunday it had killed 16 jihadists and detained 34 more in the Sinai Peninsula since launching a major operation against them on Friday.
The security sweep in the Sinai, heart of a persistent Islamic State group insurgency, comes as President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi seeks re-election next month.
Army spokesman Tamer al-Rifai said 16 jihadists had been killed and 34 detained during a “sweep and raids… in northern and central Sinai”.

Two Ohio police officers killed

Two Ohio police officers were shot and killed while responding to an emergency call during a possible domestic violence incident Saturday, authorities said.
Officers Anthony Morelli, 54, and Eric Joering, 39, were “immediately met with gunfire” when they arrived around noon at an apartment in Westerville, Police Chief Joe Morbitzer told reporters.

Woman killed Beijing knife attack

A 35-year-old man with a personal grievance attacked 13 people with a knife in a busy shopping mall in Beijing on Sunday, killing one, police said.
A woman died from her injuries after being sent to a hospital, the city’s Public Security Bureau said in a brief statement on its official microblog page.
The 12 other victims in the attack suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, it said.
