4 AL men held over factional clash in Jessore

Bagharpara police on Wednesday morning arrested four people in connection with the clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Tuesday. Police and party sources said at least five leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League were wounded in clashes between two groups of student wing of the ruling party on Tuesday and Wednesday. Of the wounded Sohan, general secretary, proposed committee, Dohakola union unit of the student wing, was rushed to Bagharpara Upazila Health Complex. Two groups of BCL led by Bayejid Hossain, president, Bagharpara upazila unit of the student wing and Juba League activist Afzal Hossain were locked in clashes on Tuesday and Wednesday over establishing supremacy, said Manjurul Alam, officer in-charge, Bagharpara police station.
The police arrested BCL upazila unit president Bayejid Hossain, BCL activist Babar Ali, Enayet Hossain Liton, Convener, Bagharpara Municipality Unit, Juba League and former BCL leader Soaib Ahmed, the OC confirmed. No case was filed in this connection.
Two Yaba peddlers held in C’nawabganj
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in separate drives arrested two alleged drug peddlers along with 3,170 pieces of contraband Yaba tablets worth of Tk 9 lakh from Sadar and Shibganj upazilas of the district on Wednesday. The arrestees were identified as Mostafizur Rahman Dollar, 46, son of Habibur Rahman of Ghorpakhia Jhillipara village in Sadar upazila and Kamal Mandal, 40, son of Abul Hossain of Uttar Ujirpur village in Shibganj upazila. On secret information, a team of Rab-5 led by Squadron Leader Mohammad Syed Abdullah Al-Murad, commander of Chapainawabganj camp, conducted a drive in Ghorpakhia Jhillipara area around 7 pm and arrested Mostafizur Rahman Dollar along with 1,765 pieces of Yaba pills. Earlier, the team conducted another drive at a brick kiln adjacent to Boglauri Ghat area in Shibganj upazila around 4 pm and arrested Kamal Mandal along with 1,045 pieces of Yaba tablets, reports UNB.
20 houses gutted in Jessore fire
JESSORE: At least 20 houses were gutted in a fire at the Ulasi-Gilpol government housing project in Sharsha upazila recently. The fire originated from the kitchen of a house around 11 pm and soon engulfed the adjacent houses, said Jahangir Hossain, station officer of Benapole Fire Service. On information, two units of firefighters from Benapole and Jhikargacha fire stations rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after one and a half hours of frantic efforts. “Initially, we estimated a loss of Tk 1 crore from the fire, said the fire official. On information, Sharsha Upazila Chairman Sirajul Haque Manju, Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pulak Kumar Mandal, Ulaashi Union Parishad Chairman Alhaj Ainal Haque and Upazila Project Implementation Officer Laltu Mia visited the spot. Each affected family got some 15 kilograms of rice, two kilograms of daal, two kilograms of potatoes, one blanket and Tk 900 in cash from the upazila, reports UNB.
College principal held with Yaba
RAJSHAHI: Members of Department of Narcotics Control arrested a college principal with ten pieces of Yaba tablets from Kharail village in Mohanpur upazila on Saturday. The arrestee was identified as Shamsuzzoha alias Belal, principal of Mougachhi College in the upazila. Deputy Director of Rajshahi Narcotics Control Department Lutfar Rahman said on information, a team headed by Mohanpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Anwar-ul-Hanif conducted a drive in the area and held Belal with the Yaba tablets, reports UNB.
