Day labourer electrocuted in Mongla

A day labourer named Nantu Mallik (30), met his tragic end after being electrocuted when he was forced to start an electric motor of water supply by his master Mizanur Rahman Mizan, a Madrasa teacher of Razzak Road in the port town of Mongla in Bagerhat district on Monday afternoon. According to some eye-witness, ill-fated Nantu Mallik had been engaged in cutting mud in the house of Mizanur Rahman for the last few days. In the afternoon while Nantu was engaged in his professional work the inmates of the house ordered him to start the power pump. But he denied comply with the order as he knew nothing about it. In spite of that he was forced to do the same and as soon as he started the motor he, somehow, touched the live electricity wire without his knowledge and he was electrocuted. The deceased was son-in-law of one Mujibor Sardar of Shelabunia of Mongla Port town.

3 held with explosive in Sylhet

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-9) in a drive arrested three people with huge explosive materials from Suraighat area under Kanaighat upazila of the district on Sunday evening, a RAB official said. The arrested men were identified as Ibrahim, 40, M Ashique, 19, and Rayhan, 35. Acting captain of RAB-9 Major Zamshedur Rahman at a press briefing said “RAB recovered 300 pieces of high explosive power gel, 300 pieces of detonators and two mobile phones from their possession”. RAB are conducting drive to arrest more associates of them, the RAB officer said.

Prisoner dies in Pabna

PABNA: A prisoner of district jail died here on Tuesday due to health complications. The deceased is identified as Ressel Hossain, 30, son of Sahjahan Ali of Bankhola village in Sujanagar Upazila. Acting officer-in-charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station Abdur Razzak said Ressel fell sick this morning as he was drug addict. He was rushed to district General Hospital where he later died, he said. Ressel landed in jail on 27 December of last year, over a narcotics case, reports UNB.

20 houses gutted in Jessore fire

JESSORE: At least 20 houses were gutted in a fire at the Ulasi-Gilpol government housing project in Sharsha upazila recently. The fire originated from the kitchen of a house around 11 pm and soon engulfed the adjacent houses, said Jahangir Hossain, station officer of Benapole Fire Service. On information, two units of firefighters from Benapole and Jhikargacha fire stations rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after one and a half hours of frantic efforts. “Initially, we estimated a loss of Tk 1 crore from the fire, said the fire official. On information, Sharsha Upazila Chairman Sirajul Haque Manju, Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pulak Kumar Mandal, Ulaashi Union Parishad Chairman Alhaj Ainal Haque and Upazila Project Implementation Officer Laltu Mia visited the spot. Each affected family got some 15 kilograms of rice, two kilograms of daal, two kilograms of potatoes, one blanket and Tk 900 in cash from the upazila, reports UNB.

College principal held with Yaba

Rajshahi, Members of Department of Narcotics Control arrested a college principal with ten pieces of Yaba tablets from Kharail village in Mohanpur upazila on Saturday. The arrestee was identified as Shamsuzzoha alias Belal, principal of Mougachhi College in the upazila. Deputy Director of Rajshahi Narcotics Control Department Lutfar Rahman said on information, a team headed by Mohanpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Anwar-ul-Hanif conducted a drive in the area and held Belal with the Yaba tablets, reports UNB.
