Pulse cultivation gains popularity in Panchagarh
PANCHAGARH: Farmers in all the five upazilas of Panchagarh district are showing more interest in farming different varieties of pulse after getting favourable weather and its high price. Officials at local office of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said pulses cultivation has been increasing in the district since 2015. Under the DAE’s Rabi crops cultivation programme, about 350 hectares of land is brought under Mashkalai (black gram) cultivation this year while 150 hectares under Masur cultivation, 120 hectares under Khesari cultivation and 160 hectares under Sesame seed (Til) and pea cultivation. Farmers said once pulse cultivation was not popular in the district, but they are now cultivating pulses due to its high market price. The DAE have set up demonstration plots of the cash crop for disseminating knowledge and technology among farmers, the DAE officials said, reports BSS.
Seven injured in Sylhet clash

At least seven people were injured in Dakkhin Surma area in Sylhet city on Friday afternoon in a clash between two groups of local youths, following an altercation over a trifling matter. Of the injured, Mabub, 19, Ilias, 18, and Mahfuz, 17, were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, while Dipu, 20, was admitted to a private clinic in the city, local people said. Witnesses said that a Mahfuz and his neighbour Zahid were locked in an altercation at a saloon at Kadamtali Point of the city’s Dakkhin Surma area over a silly issue. At one point, they left the place as local people mediated. Later, a group of some eight youths, led by Zahid, Dipu and Fahim, attacked Mahfuz and his cousins at Kadamtali Point around 1:45pm, while they were coming out of mosque after Juma prayer. Muhfuz and his cousins tried to take shelter inside a nearby confectionary, owned by their uncle Abdul Karim; but the attackers chased them and beat them up. The shop owner, Abdul Karim, alleged that the attackers also looted Tk 2 lakh from the cashbox of the shop. Dakkhin Surma police officer-in-charge Khayrul Fazal told that they visited the spot. ‘Legal step would be taken after getting a written complaint,’ he added.
Man held with 6 gold bars in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: Customs official arrested a man along with six gold bars at Bhomra land port here on Saturday morning. The arrestee was identified as Faruk Hossain, son of Majibur Rahman of Kandirpar village in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district. Bikash Barua, assistant revenue officer of Satkhira Customs, said custom officials challenged Faruk when he came to the land port for going to India. Later, they recovered the gold bars weighing 600 grams from his shoes, reports UNB.
One killed in Gopalganj clash
GOPALGANJ: A young man was killed and at least 20 others injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over establishing supremacy at Bahara village in Muksudpur upazila on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Fayek Miah, 35, son of late Raja Miah of the village. Locals said there was a long standing dispute between Abu Touyob Mia and Sarower Mia over establishing supremacy in the area. Following the dispute, the supporters of Touyob and Sarower locked into a clash with home-made weapons and sticks on Tuesday morning that leaved Fayek dead on the spot and 20 others, belonging to both the feuding groups, injured. They also carried out vandalism in opponents’ houses and looted valuables. On information police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control, said Md Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Muksudpur Police Station. Police also arrested three people from the spot, the OC added. The injured were admitted at Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex said the OC adding that additional police personnel were deployed at the area to avert furthers troubles, reports UNB.
Youth hacked to death in Pabna
PABNA: A young man was hacked to death by miscreants at Kacharipara of Pabna municipality on Thursday evening. The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam Sagar, 22, son of late Abdul Hamid of the area. Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Abdur Razzaque said a group of miscreants chopped Ariful indiscriminately around 7:30pm, leaving him injured. He was taken to Pabna General Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the OC said, reports UNB.
