Old man crushed under wheels

An old man was crushed under the wheels of a truck at Rashiknagar under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district on Sunday afternoon. The deceased is Montaj Ali, 75, son of Reshamtullah of Kamlakantapur under Chatrajitpur union of Shibganj upazila of the district. Police and local sources said, as Montaj was crossing the road at Rashiknagar on the Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid highway at around 12-30 pm, a Sonamasjid bound truck crushed him under its wheels killing him on the spot. The killer truck fled away, the sources added.
Two held with Indian liquor in Sunamganj
SUNAMGANJ: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive arrested two people and recovered Indian liquor worth around Tk 2 lakh from their possession at Muksedpur area of Tahirpur thana in the district yesterday . The arrestees are- Chan Mia, 40 son of Madar Ali and Md Jahangir Alam, 20, son of Md Shahjahan Mia both hailing from Muksedpur, said a Rab press release. Tipped off, a team of Rab conducted the drive around 2am in a residential house of the area and arrested the two, recovering bottles of Indian whiskey brand Officer’s Choice. Later, Chan Mia and Jahangir Alam were handed over to Tahirpur Police Station, reports UNB.
6 hurt in BCL-JCD clash in Thakurgaon
THAKURGAON: Six leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) were injured in a clash between two student bodies over supremacy at Hajipara area of the district town on Saturday. The injured were- an assistant secretary of district BCL, Md Barshan, 23, and JCD activists Md Antar, Hridoy, Musa, Raju and Anik Islam. According to the locals, Barshan and Antar’s groups had dispute for a long time over supremacy in the town. The two groups involved in clash beside a clinic of Hajipara at noon with sharp weapons leaving six of them critically injured, said ATM Sifatul Mazdar, Police Inspector (investigation) of Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station. Md Antar was taken to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital in serious condition, while the rest of the five were admitted to Thakurgaon Modern Sadar Hospital. Police detained one for interrogation and recovered five sharp weapons in a drive at the area, said the inspector, reports UNB.
Reception ceremony turns into violent in Jessore

The reception giving ceremony to the freedom fighters, held at Munshi Meherullah Maidan in Jessore town on Saturday morning, turned into violent after the declaration of the name of Rajek Ahmed, commander, Muktijoddha Sangsad, Jessore district unit. Jessore district administration arranged the programme to honour the great sons of the soil. Chairs and tables were ransacked during the reception giving ceremony. Deputy commissioner Ashraf Uddin made the situation calms assuring angry freedom fighters to come into a solution within three days. In response to the violence, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, lawmaker for Jessore- 3 constituency, in his speech told,’ you have showed you’re still rebellious.’ ‘You should keep in mind that you are aged enough,’ the lawmaker added. Eye witnesses said some freedom fighters starting shouting and ransacking chairs and tables as soon as the name of Rajek Ahmed was announced as the district commander of Muktijoddha Sangsad, at one stage of the reception, in presence of lawmaker Kazi Nabil Ahmed, deputy commissioner Ashraf Uddin and superintendent of police, Jessore Anisur Rahman. Rajek Ahmed described the matter as sequence of personal enmity while Rabiul Alam, deputy commander, Bangladesh Liberation Front (which was active during the war of liberation), said freedom fighters did it in protest against continuing of expired committee.
