4.1 kg heroin recovered in C’nawabganj

 Chapainawabganj Police recovered 4 kg 100 grams of heroin worth Tk. 4 crore 10 lakh from frontier Hakimpur area in Chapainawabganj sadar upazila on Sunday night. Superintendent of Police (SP) of Chapainawabganj TM Mojahidul Islam said, acting on a tip off a team of police from Chapainawabganj Sadar thana and Detective Branch ambushed in a mustard field at Hakimpur frontier on the bank of the river Padma at around 10-30 pm. Seeing a boat coming from the Indian side police chased it and at this the boatman fled away swimming. After searching the boat police found the heroin in a bag. There is a gang of heroin smugglers and police have identified them and they would be arrested very soon, he added.
Wangala Festival held in Sreemangal

Garo people celebrated their largest annual festival Wangala in Moulvibazar’s Sreemangal on Sunday. This is the festival when they dedicate harvests to the God seeking his satisfaction. Thousands of Garo people attended the day-long programme on St. Teresa Church playground in Biddabil Tea garden and began the festivity by offering their traditional prayers. Traditional formalities were maintained while dedicating crops to the God. Partho Areng, president of Sreechuk youth Garo organization during Wangala, young people and old dressed in colour and dance with music. Katta Doka (talking in a singing style), Ajea, Dani Doka (describing Wangala by singing) are performed during the day. He said, Wangala the greatest traditional festival of Garo was celebrated at every harvesting period in late autumn in the past. The highlight of the festival is when dancers and drums descend on the field. Wangala ushers in a festive mood. People meet and get to know each other, and it works as a catalyst for national unity among us, he added. This cultural programme was also arranged by Sreechuk Youth Garo organisation as part of the festivity and Bishop Bejoy N. D’ Cruze, head of Sylhet Catholic Diocese attended as a honorable guest and Sreemangal Upazila chairman Ranadhir Kumar Deb was present there as the chief guest.
Arms trader held in C’nawabganj  
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested an alleged arms trader along with a pistol and bullets from Shahapur Munshipara village in Shibganj upazila early Saturday. Squadron leader Md Sayeed Abdulalh Al-Murad, commanding officer of Rab-5 Chapainawabgnaj camp, said sensing presence of a patrol team of Rab in the area, Mohammad Babu, 30, son of Sayedur Rahman of Shahapur Munshipara village, tried to flee. The elite force members chased him and arrested him along with one pistol, one magazine and four rounds of bullet. During primary interrogation, Babu admitted that he had long been involved in arms trading, the Rab commander added. A case was filed with Shibganj police station, reports UNB.
Month-long handicrafts fair begins in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A month-long handicrafts and cottage goods fair began here on Sunday with the main thrust of expansion and popularization of the goods. Local unit of Bangladesh Women Entrepreneurs Association of Bangladesh (WEAB) organized the event titled ” Winter cloth, Handicrafts and Cottage Industries Product Fair- 2017″ at Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Green Plaza. A spectrum of locally produced handicrafts goods including leather products, jute-made products, processed agricultural products, electrical and electronic goods, clothes, design and fashion wares and other products are being displayed in the fair through 15 stalls. Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, and RCC Mayor Musaddeque Hossain Bulbul addressed the opening session as chief and special guests respectively with WEAB local unit president Anjuman Ara in the chair. President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman and President of Bangladesh Silk Industries Owners Association Liakat Ali also spoke on the occasion, reports BSS.
