Holy Ashura observed in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: The holy Ashura was observed here on Sunday with due religious fervor and zeal. Different religious organisations, including Islamic Foundation, observed the day through various programmes. Shi’a community people brought out a Tazia procession in the city from Shaheb Bazar area and paraded main streets chanting “Hai Hussein, Hai Hussein”. Besides, several processions were brought out from the city’s different areas including Dargapara, Seroil and Upashahar areas. Other programmes of the day included Quran Khwani, Milad Mahfil and fasting. Islamic Foundation organized a discussion on ‘Importance of Holy Ashura in Preserving Peace and Order in Society’ at divisional office, reports BSS.
Free health camp held in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA,: A day-long free health camp for the poor was held on the premises of Shaghata Union Parishad (UP) under Shaghata Upazila in the district on Saturday. Association of Mymensingh Ex-Cadets organized the camp with the help of Shaghata UP. A number of physicians including eight specialists provided the healthcare services to the patients, sources said. Over 1,500 poor patients with chronically affected diseases received free healthcare services including medicines. Besides, the association also donated 12 sanitary latrines and two tube-wells to flood affected people of the union. General Secretary of the association and Additional District and Sessions Judge of Rajbari district Maksuda Parvin led the camp while UP chairman Mosarrof Hossain Sweet assisted him. The locals thanked the association for arranging the free health camp, reports BSS.
Carpenter electrocuted in Sherpur
SHERPUR: A carpenter died from electrocution in Nabinagar area of the district town on Sunday morning.Witnesses said Jahurul Islam, 34, son of Abdul Halim Mistri, a resident of Nabinagar Gairal Bari area, was going to a paddy field adjacent to his house for collecting feed for his cattle. However, Jahurul got electrocuted when he touched an iron pillar which was directly connected with live electric wire around 8:00 am and died on the spot, said officer-in-charge of Sherpur Sadar Police Station M Nazrul Islam, reports UNB.
School teacher dies from snakebite in Narail
NARAIL: A school teacher died from snakebite at Bakdanga village under Lohagara upazila of the district on Sunday night.The victim was identified as Khandaker Abdur Razzak, 55, head master of Mithapur Government Prinary School of the upazila and resident of the same area.Police and family sources said a poisonous snake bit Razzak while he was taking cow fodder at his cowshed.
After the incident he was taken to Narail Sdar hospital. Later he was sent to Khulna Madical College Hospital where on duty doctor declared him dead.
Drug peddler arrested with hemp, motorcycle
BENAPOLE: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a suspected drug trader with 10 kilograms of Indian hemp and a motorcycle at Sarbanghuda border village in Benapole on Wednesday night. The arrestee is Azizul Islam, 40, son of Abdus Samad of Raghunathpur village of Benapole. Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Haque, commanding officer of BGB-49 battalion, said on information, a team of BGB members conducted a drive in the area and arrested him along with his motorbike. They later recovered the consignment of hemp from his possession.A case was filed in this connection, reports UNB.
Police arrest 18 in Habiganj
Habiganj: Police, in separate drives arrested 18 accused from different areas of the district recently. Assistant Superintendent of Habiganj Police (ASP) Nazim Uddin said, they were picked up on different charges. Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, he added. The arrested were sent to jail, reports BSS.
