 Semi-automated Jute Fiber Extraction Machine ‘Ashcall’ introduced

 Jute sector is one of the most potential sectors in Bangladesh. In order to overcome various challenges, semi-automated Jute Fiber Extraction Machine ‘Ashcall’ has been introduced in July this year in four northern districts of Bangladesh. The districts are Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha. In this sequence, for mass awareness among the people, a road show was organised on August 7 at Rangpur RDRS premises followed by a field demonstration at Lalmonirhat. Among others, Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Gen) of Rangpur, S. M. Ashraf Ali, Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension(DAE), Hasin Jahan, Country Director, Practical Action, Ms. Monjusree Shaha, Director (Dev Programme), RDRS Bangladesh, Dr. Faruk-Ul-Islam, Head of Policy, Practice and Program Development, Practical Action, AZM Nazmul Islam Chowdhury, Head of Extreme Poverty, Dr. Abul Fazal Mollah, PSO and In charge, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Public Relation Advisor, Karupannya Rangpur Limited, Mr. Monjur Ahmed, Vice President, Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and industries and respective journalists from print and electronic media were present on the occasion. It is mentionable here that Practical Action Bangladesh, an NGO is implementing “Securing Employment and Economic Development around Jute Textile and Light Engineering Sector in North-West Bangladesh” project, together with RDRS Bangladesh, Karupannya Rangpur Limited, Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Rangpur Zilla Lathe Machine Sromic Union, with the funding support from the European Commission and aims to strengthen the skills and employability of workers, entrepreneurs in the cottage and small enterprises in the Jute and light-engineering sectors in order to enhance their competitiveness in both national and global market.

Jalalabad College closed for 3-day over attack on BCL men

Jalalabad College has been declared closed for three days over an attack by some miscreants at Sobhanighat in front of the college gate in the Sylhet city. Collage principal Baki Chowdhury Said, The college authority took the decision to remain the college closed from Tuesday to Thursday as a tense situation is prevailing on the campus. Quoting witnesses, police said a group of miscreants, riding on motorbikes swooped on Shaheen and Asif around 1:00 pm and stabbed them indiscriminately over previous enmity, leaving them injured. They were taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital where the doctors shifted Shaheen to Dhaka as his right hand was severed from his body during the attack. Following the incident, a group of young people vandalised the college and an adjoining clinic. Meanwhile Two activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were stabbed by some miscreants in cityÕs Sobhanighat area on Monday.
