‘Arms trader’ held with arms in C’nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive here on Saturday arrested an alleged arms trader along with arms and ammunition in Kamadpara area under Binodpur union in Shibganj upazila. The detainee is identified as Tahurul Islam, 25, son of Parul Islam of Kiranganj area of the upazila. In a press statement Rab-5 said acting on a tip-off they conducted a raid in the area around 12:30 pm and arrested Tahurul with two pistols, five rounds of bullets and four magazines. A case was filed with Shibganj Police Station in this connection.
Immediate announcement of 9th Wage Board demanded
KHULNA: Journalist leaders here on Sunday demanded announcement of the ninth wage board as soon as possible. Terming Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu as ‘enemy of media’, the journalists also demanded removal of the minister. The journalists made the demand while addressing a rally organised by Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner with KUJ president SM Zahid Hossain in the chair.Speakers at the rally said the government should announce the wage board without any delay for enhancing journalists’ salaries and other facilities as their economic condition became intolerable due to price hike of essential items and continuous increase of house rent. The journalists also demanded cancellation of 57 clause of ICT act terming ‘the law is against basic rights of journalists.’ Joint Secretary General of BFUJ Mozammel Haque Howlader, former KUJ president Mokbul Hossain Mintu, Sheikh Abu Hassan, SM Habib, Mamun Reza and Anwarul Islam Kazol, among others, spoke on the occasion. Later, KUJ leaders handed over a memorandum to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Zahangir Hossain. On July 18, journalists leaders of BFUJ and DUJ in a rally held in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka gave an ultimatum till July 29 to announce the new wage board, reports BSS
Rotarians thru’ tree plantation stressed
RANGPUR: Leaders of Rotary Club of Rangpur Central (RCRC) at a function here have called upon the Rotarians and common people for improving environment through massive tree plantation. They mentioned that massive forestation could create an eco-friendly green nature for adaptation to adverse impacts of climate change to bring ecological equilibrium for sustainable economic development. They came up with the observations at the function organised by RCRC on Friday afternoon at Binodpur Graveyard premises for launching tree plantation campaign in the city. President of RCRC Rotarian Mozammel Haque launched the campaign and presided over the brief discussion arranged on the occasion.General Secretary of RCRC Rotarian Shafi Uddin Ahmed, its Past Presidents Rotarian Farhad Hossain, Rotarian Siddique Abu Sayeed Khokan, Rotarian Nurul Alma Khokan and Rotarian Aminul Haque Khokan addressed, among others.Joint Secretary of RCRC Rotarian Anwarul Azim, members of RCRC, a number of students of Begum Rokeya University, members of Binodpur Grayed Managing Committee were present, reports BSS.
Worker killed in lightning

A female worker was killed and two others were injured by a lightning strike in Durgapur upazila on Saturday. Khan Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Durgapur Police Station, said Rahima Khatun, 55, died on the spot, and her husband Abdus Sattar and another man suffered injuries as a thunderbolt hit them while they were collecting coal from the Someshwari River at noon.
