RU celebrates 64th founding anniversary

Teachers, students and staff of Rajshahi University on Thursday celebrated the university’s 64th founding anniversary amid great enthusiasm and festivity on the campus. RU vice chancellor Professor M Abdus Sobhan inaugurated the day at 10am in front of the administrative building by hoisting the national and university flags, and releasing pigeons. A colourful procession with banners and festoons was brought out on the campus led by the vice chancellor at 10:30am while more than thousands students, teachers and staff took part in that procession that paraded the whole campus. Later, a discussion was held at the university senate building at 11:00am.RU teachers’ association president Professor Md Nazrul Islam and RU geography and environmental studies department Professor Md Raquib Ahmed were the key speaker at the discussion programme. Professor Dr. M. Sayeedur Rahman Khan, former vice chancellor of the university and also former high commissioner of Bangladesh to United Kingdom addresses the programme as chief guest with RU vice chancellor Professor Abdus Sobhan in chair. Addressing the discussion programme, vice chancellor in his speech vowed to establish a violent and militant free campus as well as establishing the university as a model for the whole world. He recalled the outstanding sacrifice of Professor Shamsuzzoha for the democratic movement of Bangladesh, who was shot dead in 1969 by oppressive rulers of Pakistan.
Smart cards distribution in Khulna from July 18
KHULNA: The Election Commission (EC) will begin smart card distribution in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) area among National Identity Card (NID) holders from July 18. Later, the EC will distribute smart cards among NID holders of nine upazilas and two municipalities of the district. Election Commissioner Kabita Khanam and Shahadat Chowdhury are expected to inaugurate the distribution at a function in Khulna city, said Ashiqur Rahman, communication officer of NID registration section, EC. According to Khulna EC, a total of 4, 57,344 voters of city area and around 10 lakh voters in the district will get smart cards. On October 2, 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated smart card distribution at Osmani auditorium among the NID card holders of Dhaka, reports BSS.
Woman crushed under train in Gazipur
GAZIPUR: A woman was killed as a train ran over her at Joydebpur railway station this morning. The woman is identified as Aisha Begum, 65, a resident of Mymensingh district. Md Ashik, a grandson of the woman, said when she was walking along the rail track at Joydebpur station, a Sirajganj-bound train crushed her under its wheels, leaving her dead on the spot. Railway police said they recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, reports BSS.
Zonal Managers urged to discharge duties with sincerity
RAJSHAHI: Utmost importance should be given on attaining all business targets of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) of the current fiscal so that it can uphold the pace of earning profit. Aim of the present government is to build a skilled, strengthened and inclusive financial management in the country. Besides, the government is committed to reach the banking services to the peoples’ doorsteps. RAKUB management and its senior bankers came up with the observations while addressing the performance evaluation meeting of zonal managers at Postal Academy conference hall here on Thursday. Chairman of the bank Nazrul Islam and its Director Prof Rustam Ali Ahmed addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively with Managing Director Kazi Sanaul Haque in the chair. General Managers Rafiqul Alam Chowdhury, Mahmudun Nabi, Mozammel Haque, Khandaker Golam Mostofa and Younus Ali also spoke. In addition to all departmental heads of head office, 18 zonal managers, divisional audit officers, zonal audit officers, principal of RAKUB Training Institute and project director of SECP were present on the occasion, reports BSS.
