Maize harvest going on in full swing in Rangpur

Harvesting of maize is going on in full swing across Rangpur agriculture region and the farmers are delighted to witness a good yield of their produce. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources maize was cultivated on around 99,633 hectares of land this season with a production target 7.97 lakh tonnes of grain in five districts of Rangpur agriculture zone.The districts are: Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Gaibandha. Visiting the maize fields in different areas under the region, this correspondent found the farmers and farm labourers passing busy time reaping and gathering the maize from morning to night.Presently the crop is being sold at Tk 440 to Tk 480 per maund which is not so satisfactory to the growers. Farmers also hoped that its price would go up within next month. Many farmers are yet to sell their produce to get more profit later.Nazrul Mia, a farmer at Char Nazirdaho village under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur, said that he brought 1.15 bigha of land under cultivation of maize this season, spending around Tk 10,000. He got 60 maunds of grain which he has sold at Tk 27,000. DAE D D S M Asraf Ali said the department provided the farmers with logistic support including fertilisers and other necessary agri-inputs during the time of cultivation in order to enhance maize production.
Housewife electrocuted in Satkhira  
SATKHIRA: A housewife died from electrocution at Kadakati village in Ashashuni upazila on Friday. Quoting local people, Shahidul Islam Shahin, officer-in-charge of Ashashuni Police Station, said Moina Khatun, 28, wife of Afaz Uddin, came in contact with live electric wire while cleaning a refrigerator with a wet cloth in the morning, leaving her dead on the spot. Police recovered the body and sent it to local hospital morgue, reports UNB.
Youth commits suicide outside UP member’s house in Jessore village
JESSORE: A young man apparently committed suicide by hanging himself from a mango tree in the village of Bolpur, in Sadar upazila of Jessore on Thursday. Locals spotted the body of Vokto Majumdar, 27, son of late Shantiram Majumdar of Narail, hanging from the tree adjacent to the house of UP member Abdus Samad in the morning.On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore General Hospital morgue for autopsy, said sub-inspector (SI) Zakir of Talbaria Police Camp. It is still not clear what pushed Vokto to commit suicide, said the SI, reports UNB.
4 pirates held in Sundarbans
SATKHIRA: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested four suspected members of a gang of pirates, the notorious Shafikul Bahini, from Kalagachhia Khal in Satkhira Range of the Sundarbans on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off that members of Shafikul Bahini were in Kalagachhia Khal, a team of Rab-6 based in Satkhira carried out the drive to catch them, according to Lieutenant Colonel Jahid, the commander of Rab-6. During the drive, the elite force members arrested Milon Gain, 35, and his brother Bacchu Gain, 25, Asadul Islam, 29, and Al-Amin Moral, 45 – all residents of Datinakhali village in Shyamnagar upazila. The drive also recovered three arms, and six bullets from the robbers, said OC of Shyamnagar Police Station Syed Abdul Mannan, adding a case was filed with the police station in this connection, reports UNB.
Five jailed for liquor drinking in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A mobile court here has convicted five persons including two school-teachers and sentenced them to suffer three months jail each on charge of drinking alcohol in school-office room. The convicts were identified as Headmaster Sultan Ahmed, 42, assistant teacher Bulbul Ahmed, 38, deed-writers Shah Alam, 35, Mustafizur Rahman, 40, and retired serviceman Durul Huda, 30.On a tip-off, a police team conducted a raid at Chhaor Junior Girls School under Tanore Upazila in the district on Thursday afternoon and found them dinking liquor there, reports BSS.
