50 demonstration plots taken up in Jamalpur
JAMALPUR: Agriculture Department has brought 50 demonstration plots under its T-Aman paddy programme to produce quality seeds in farmers level in the district during the current season. According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) source, eight plots in Jamalpur sadar, and seven each plots in Islampur, Melandah, Sarishabari, Dewanganj, Bakshiganj and Madarganj upazilas have been brought under the programme. According to DAE under the programme a farmer received 8-kg T-Aman seed and 26-kg Urea, 7-kg triple superphosphate (TSP), 11-kg of Muriate of Potash (MOP) and 8-kg Gypsum fertiliser. The varieties are – BINA-7, BRRI-52, BRRI-56, BRRI-66 and BRRI-70. Deputy Director of Seed Marketing of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), Md Reazul Islam Tutul said, “we disbursed foundation seeds to the Agriculture Department to distribute among the farmers”. Earlier, the farmers have also been imparted training on T-Aman cultivation and preservation of seeds, reports BSS.
3 held with 37 tonnes fertilizer in Jessore
JESSORE: Members of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested three alleged smugglers and seized a truck with 740 sacks of government subsidised fertilizer from Churamati Bazar of Sadar upazila in the district on Wednesday. The arrestees are- Imamul Hossain, 18, son of Tahazzat Ali of Bodhkhana village in Jhikargachha, Sagir Hossain, 42, son of Amir Hossain, hailing from Sitarampur of Sadar upazila, and Abul Kalam, 36, from Bokchar Chowdhurypara in the district. At a press briefing, officer-in-charge of DB, Emaul Haque, said tipped off, a team of police chased the truck which was moving to Phulbari upazila in Dinajpur and arrested three persons. Later, they seized 740 sacks of fertilizer weighing around 37 tonnes, he said, adding that a case was filed with Kotowali Police Station in this connection, reports UNB.
Schoolgirl commits suicide in Benapole
BENAPOLE: A schoolgirl allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Narayanpur village in Benapole Port Police Station on Tuesday. The deceased was Asha Basu, 14, a class VII student of Benapole Marium Memorial Girls’ School in Benapole and daughter of Jatin Basu of the village. The girl’s relatives said Asha killed herself with ceiling by orna (a piece of cloth) in her room in the morning.On information, police recovered the hanging body and sent it to hospital morgue, said sub-Inspector of Benapole Port Police Station Monir Hossain, reports UNB.
10 injured in Laxmipur over payment
LAXMIPUR: At least 10 people, including local Awami League leader Imam Hossain, were injured in a clash between two groups over due money in Koratirhat area of Sadar upazila in the district on Tuesday. Imam is general secretary of Ward-2 under Charmani union in the upazila. According to local people, Imam runs a grocery shop in the area from where local BNP activist Jalal Ahmed used to buy goods keeping money due. An altercation ensued at around 9:30 pm when Imam demanded Jalal to pay due. They later engaged in fierce clash that left at least 10 people injured. The injured were taken to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital. Of them, Delwar Hossain, who is in critical condition, was sent to Noakhali General Hospital for better treatment. Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, Md Lokman Hossain said, on information, police rushed to the spot to investigate into the incident, reports UNB.
