One killed in Sylhet road crash

A driver of a microbus was killed and five others were injured as a truck collided head-on with a microbus in Baghersarak area of Sylhet-Tamabil Highway on Saturday night. The dead is identified as Abdus Salam, 30, son of Abdul Matin of Khalerpar area in Sylhet Dakshin Surma upazila.Officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Police Station Shafiul Kabir, quoting local people, said a collision between Jaflong-bound truck and Sylhet-bound microbus took place around 11:00pm, injuring six people, including Salam.The injured were rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where Salam succumbed to his injuries at night, he said.
Youth held with two firearms in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: During an anti-crime operation, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a youth with two firearms and two rounds of bullets in the city last night, RAB sources said here on Monday. The arrested person was identified as Sairul Islam, 22, son of Asim Uddin of Kanchantala village under Gomostapur Upazila of Chapainawabgonj district. On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid at Naodapara area under Shahmukhdum Police Station in the city around 3.45 am and arrested Sairul Islam. The team also seized two pistols and two rounds of bullets from his possession.The arrested person with the seized firearms and ammunition were handed over to police after lodging a case in this connection, reports BSS.
Zinc-enriched seed distributed among farmers
JHENAIDAH: Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) distributed zinc-enriched seed among 750 small and marginal farmers in the district today for increasing the production of the variety. Tahjib Alam Siddique MP distributed the seeds at a simple function among the farmers at Holidhani High School playground as the chief guest. Chairman of Holidhani union parishad Abdur Rashid Miah presided over the function.Deputy Director of DAE Saha M Akramul Haque, Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Dr Khan M Moniruzzaman and ARDO of Harvestplus Bangladesh Mojibur Rahman were present. Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) distributed the seeds free of cost with the assistance of seed production institution “Harvestplus Bangladesh” aimed to increase the cultivation of zinc-enriched BRRI Dhan-62, 72, reports BSS.
3 held with 37 tonnes fertilizer in Jessore  
JESSORE: Members of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested three alleged smugglers and seized a truck with 740 sacks of government subsidised fertilizer from Churamati Bazar of Sadar upazila in the district on Wednesday. The arrestees are- Imamul Hossain, 18, son of Tahazzat Ali of Bodhkhana village in Jhikargachha, Sagir Hossain, 42, son of Amir Hossain, hailing from Sitarampur of Sadar upazila, and Abul Kalam, 36, from Bokchar Chowdhurypara in the district. At a press briefing, officer-in-charge of DB, Emaul Haque, said tipped off, a team of police chased the truck which was moving to Phulbari upazila in Dinajpur and arrested three persons. Later, they seized 740 sacks of fertilizer weighing around 37 tonnes, he said, adding that a case was filed with Kotowali Police Station in this connection, reports UNB.
Best book reading practice organizers receive awards
RAJSHAH: Organisers of book reading development programme of 164 educational institutions were given Rajshahi divisional best organisers Award- 2016. They get the prizes at a colourful prize giving ceremony held at Nanking Darbar Hall hosted by Bishwa Sahitya Kendra (BSK) here on Sunday. More than 1652 educational institutions in 26 Upazilas under eight districts of Rajshahi division took part in the year-round book reading practice development programme for flourishing latent talents of students. BSK under its Reading Habit Programme organised the programme in association with Secondary Education Quality and Access Enhancement Project (SEQAEP) to give away prizes among the organisers who show their best performance in the evaluation phase, reports BSS.
SEQAEP Director Dr Mahamud-Ul-Haque attended the programme as the chief guest with BSK Trustee Khandaker Asaduzzaman in the chair.
Additional Divisional Commissioner Aminul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif, Regional Director of Department of Secondary and Higher Education Prof Dr Abdul Mannan and District Education Officer Rafiqul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
BKS Trustee Asaduzzaman told the meeting that there are 21.70 lakh readers under the book reading practice development programme across the country in 2017.
Chief Guest Dr Mahamud-Ul-Haque said the programme is being implemented in 12,000 educational institutions in country’s 250 upazilas for quality improvement of education. From those, 1184 organizers were selected for the best award in 2016.
He mentioned that book always makes people beautiful, brighten and prosperous. Only the people enriched with prosperous heart can build bright Bangladesh.
The students and young generation will develop Bangladesh through making themselves enriched with nation-building knowledge.
Dr Mahamud Haque said reading habit enlightens people, easy and creative books are very essential for wide spreading reading habit. He underscored the need for reaching books at the doorsteps of the readers to make it happened.
He also hoped the festival will contribute a lot to attain the desired goal and sought all-out cooperation from all quarters to make it a total success.
