Farming of this Cash Crop has been going on in full swing in Sylhet division. So far, 1719 hectares of land had been brought under jute farming – 601 hectares of them under local varieties, 79 hectares under Tosha variety, 834 hectares under Kenaf and 205 hectares under Mesta variety, according to a report of the divisional office of DAE.The yield target has been set at nine bales a hectare, said Deputy Director of DAE divisional office Dr Mamun Ur Rashid.Jute farming had been almost neglected in this north-east region of the country, as farmers would cultivate it mainly for consumption as a vegetable item and to meet other household needs, but the situation has changed to a great extent over the last few years, he said.The official also said the DAE had been extending technical assistance to farmers to boost yield of jute.
Idols of Hindu temple damaged

Unknown miscreants on early Sunday allegedly damaged five idols of Ganesh Pagol temple at Ambari village under Bakal union of Agoiljhara upazila in Barisal district. Monirul Islam, officer in charge of Agoiljhara police station, acknowledging the facts said he and assistant superintendent of police Rezaul Karim visited the spot on Sunday noon. Till this report no case was lodged and police trying to nab accused, the OC told. Alomoti, caretaker (sebayet) of the temple, said the temple was established by the people of Hindu community more than ten-year ago. On Saturday night yearly feast was held at the temple till 10:00 PM and after ending the festival she went home locking the door of the temple at about 12:00 AM early Sunday. However after visiting the temple on Sunday morning she found the door of temple was open with broken locks and five idols of Radha-Govinda, Radha-Krishna, Pagol Chan, Hari Chan and Ganesh Pagol were damaged by unknown miscreants, Alomoti told.Then she informed other villagers and they informed police, Alomoti added.
Passenger Coach Enters Into Shrimp Farm in Morrelganj

A passenger coach of Falguni Paribahan that was going from Dhaka to Rayenda, Sharankhola Upazila headquarters in Bagerhat district on Thursday at night entered into a road side shrimp farm named Mollarrastr Mor (turn) of Signboard-Bogi, a regional Highway at 2-00 am under Morrelganj Upazila in the same district when the driver lost his control over the steering, according to a delayed report received here. At that time 25/30 passengers were in the coach. Fortunately none of them received major injuries. Being informed of the matter a fire service unit of Morrelganj rushed to spot, rescued the passengers and took steps to reach the passengers to their destinations. Md. Abdur Rob, counter-in-charge of Morrelganj of Falguni Paribahan disclosed to the newsmen, while the driver of the coach tried to side a motor cycle that was coming from the opposite direction the accident took place.
But the locals claimed, while the speeding passenger coach was taking turn its brake failed and consequently, the accident took the place. Another report states that a few days ago a motor cyclist and its co-rider were killed on the spot on the same Highway at Mdajhibari point under Morrelganj Upazila in the district when they were run over by a night coach of Parjatak Paribahan at 4 am.
One held with 10 gold bars at Benapole
BENAPOLE: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained an alleged smuggler along with 10 gold bars from Putkhali border area here yesterday morning. The arrestee was identified as Babul Akhter, son of Ebadul Haque, resident of Putkhali village. Nayek Subedar Abul Hossain, company commander of BGB Putkhali camp, said that on secret information a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area at around 8am and held him. Later, they recovered the gold bars, worth about TK 38 lakh, searching his body. The detainee was handed over to Benapole Port Police Station, he added.
A case has been filed in this connection, reports UNB.
