Divisional seminar on diploma engineering held

A divisional seminar on taking exam of diploma engineering in a fair manner and expansion of technical education was held at Rangpur Polytechnic institute auditorium on Monday. Additional Divisional Commissioner Minu Sheel addressed the seminar as the chief guest while Dr. Murad Hossain Molla, director (ICT), Technical Education Board, Dhaka was in the chair. Heads of around 45 government and non-government Polytechnic Institutes under 8 districts in Rangpur division took part in the seminar. Among others Additional Deputy Commissioner Ruhul Amin Mia, Acting principal of Rangpur Polytechnic Institute, Khaled Hossain also addressed the seminar.

Man held with arms, ammo

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged arms trader with a pistol, two magazines and four rounds of bullet from Bhabanipur Bonpara village under Shibganj upazila of the district earlier on Saturday. The arrested person was identified as Md. Sayem, 19. RAB-5 said, on secret information, an operation team of from Rajshahi Mollapara Camp of the anti-crime elite force conducted a raid last night and arrested Sayem with the arms and ammunition. Later he was handed over to the Shibganj Thana police. A case was filed in this connection.

Field-day on harvesting Zink paddy held

PANCHAGARH: Farmers’ field day on harvesting Zink-74 BARI variety was held at Barro Awulia under Atowary upazila of the district here on Tuesday. Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) of Panchagarh Shamsul Huque formally inaugurated the field day by cutting paddy as the chief guest. A reputed NGO RDRS Bangladesh Panchagarh branch arranged the field day. Programme Manager of RDRS Panchagarh Hasina Purvin, Agriculture Officer Noor-A-Alam, assistant coordination officer of RDRS Bangladesh Rangpur Mahabub Alam and large number of farmers were present.

One held with 10 gold bars in Benapole

BENAPOLE: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a man along with 10 gold bars from Benapole rail station here on Tuesday. Tipped off, a team of BGB conducted a drive at the station and arrested Monir Hossain, son of Abdus Sobhan of Putkhali village, along with the gold bars worth Tk 38 lakh, said Lt Col Ariful Rahman, commanding officer of BGB-49 battalion. A case filed in this connection. The gold bars were deposited to the customs office, reports UNB.

One to die for killing wife in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ: A court here on Tues day sentenced one person to death for killing his wife in Sadar upazila about eight years ago. Additional District and Session Judge Al Mahmud Fayzul Kabir pronounced the verdict in presence of the killer husband. The court also fined the convict, M Rasel Mollah, 45, son of Jeher Mollah of Sarundi Dakkhinpara village in Manikganj Pourasava, Taka 20,000. The prosecution story, inbrief, is that Rubel strangulated to death his wife Rehena on September 25, 2009 as she refused to get permission for her husband’s second marriage. After the incident, neighbours caught Rubel and handed over to the police. The next day, Ibrahim Mollah, father of the victim filed a murder case with Manikganj Police Station. Police, after investigation, submitted chargesheet before the court agaist Rubel.
