Female drug peddler gets life term

A Barisal court on Thursday afternoon sentenced a female drug peddler to life imprisonment and fined her Tk 20 thousand or to serve more six months in jail in default. Rafiqul Islam, Judge of the tribunal for Prevention of Crimes against Public Safety, after examining 12 witnesses and other evidences declared this verdict in absence of the fugitive accused. Sentenced accused Marium Begum Chomchom was wife of Iqbal Hossain from Kacherkhol of Mirzapur under Jhenaidah district. The case history in brief was a petrol team of Rapid Action Battalion Unit-8 searching the detained accused at Sher E Bangla Road under ward-28 of Barisal City Corporation area recovered 52 bottle Phensidyl from her possession on August 29, 2013. Sardar Ibrahim Hossain, sub inspector of RAB-8, as complainant lodged a case against Chomchom with Barisal Airport police station on the same day. Sub Inspector Sultan Ahmed, investigation officer of the case, submitted charge sheet against the accused on September 29, 2013.
Dhaka-M’singh rail link restored after 6 hrs
GAZIPUR: Train services on Dhaka-Mymensingh route restored after six hours of suspension following derailment of a bogie at Joydebpur Rail Station here on Friday. Earlier, the compartment of Mymensingh-bound ‘Jamuna Express’ from Dhaka veered off the track while entering the railway station around 7:15 am, halting train movement on the route, said Dadon Mia, assistant sub-inspector of Jopydebpur Railway Station. A number of trains remained stranded following the derailment. However, the train services resumed around 12:55 pm after a relief train salvaged the bogie, reports UNB.
RU student drowns in pond
RAJSHAHI: A Rajshahi University student drowned in a pond inside Teachers Training College here on Thursday evening. Fahim Hossain, 20, a 1st year student of English Department of the university, drowned in the pond while taking bath around 6:30 pm. On information, a firefighting unit rushed in and recovered Fahim, said Omar Faruk, station officer of Rajshahi Fire Service. Fahim, hailing from Jamalpur district, was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, reports UNB.
One to die for killing wife
KHULNA: A tribunal here on Thursday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife in 2010. According to the prosecution, Sheikh Mirajul alias Amanullah, 27, son of Wajed Ali Sheikh of Tungipara in Gopalganj, and his wife Hosne Ara had been living at Natunbazar of the city. On January 28, 2010, the couple locked into an altercation over a family problem, and Mirajul, at one stage, hit his wife with a grinder stone, leaving her dead on the spot. Nannu Shikder, brother of the victim, then filed a case with Sadar Police Station. Police submitted a charge-sheet against Mirajul on February 3, 2011. After examining records and witnesses, Khulna Special Tribunal Judge SM Solaiman handed down the verdict, reports UNB.

Monthly law and order meeting was held at the conference room of Upazila BRDB Conference room in Biswanath Upazila on Monday.Omitab Parag Talukdar presided over the meeting. Assistant Commissioner Abdul Haque, OC of Biswanath Monirul Islam PPM, UP Chairman Amir Ali, Upazila FF Commander Whahid Ali, Ansar BDP Officer Sriti Rani Dar, AGM of PDB Najmul Hasan were present in the meeting.
