8 fishermen held in Chandpur with huge current net
CHANDPUR: Naval police arrested eight fishermen and seized 45,000 meters of current net along with five kg Jatka (hilsa fry) and three boats in a drive on the Meghna River in Sadar upazila on Friday. A mobile court, led by the upazila land officer and executive magistrate Abhishek Das, sentenced three among the arrestees-Md Shafik Khan,18, Md Shohag, 18, Shahjalal, 20– to one year imprisonment and fined another three Tk 1,000 each. Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chandpur naval outpost, said the seized current net was burnt in front of the district fisheries officer, while the jatka distributed among the orphanage, the poor and madrasas, reports UNB.
Birth centenary of Poet Ahsan Habib observed in Barisal

Birth centenary of Poet Ahsan Habib and 50th session of ‘Adda Dhanshiri’ observed in Barisal on Friday. The day long programme was organised by ‘Adda Dhanshiri’, a literary organisation, and included seminar, discussion, literary gossip, recitation at Abdul Khalek Auditorium , rally on city roads, visiting Muktijoddha Park and journey by boat on Kirtankhola River. Muhammad Muhsin, secretary Adda Dhanshiri, presided over the and Tushar Das, research scholar on the life and achievements of the poet, was chief guest of the programme. Fahima Yasmin Keya presented key notes of the seminar and among others Poet Shamim Reza, Haris Mizan, Tapankar Chakraborty, teachers and students of Barisal University, different public colleges participated in the programmes. The discussants and participants of the programmes thanking Adda Dhanshiri for organising such an event called all to expand study and research on life and achievements of the Poet.
Social awareness needed to prevent child marriage
RAJSHAHI: Administrative officials, public representatives and development activists at a pre-rally discussion here on Saturday observed that creating mass-awareness has become an urgent need to prevent child marriage. To this end, all concerned including teachers, parents, religious leaders and members of school managing committee should put in their level best efforts. The collective efforts will supplement the national work plan 2013-2025 for combating violence against women and children and achieving the sustainable development goals- 2030, they added. The Hunger Project Bangladesh (THPB) organized the bicycle-rally at Sardah Union Parishad area under Charghat Upazila in the district in association with Her Choice Programme and Safe School for Girls Campaign. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ashraful Islam and Officer-in-Charge of Charghat Police Station Nibaran Chandra Barman addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Hasanuzzaman Madhu, Chairman of the Union Parishad, in the chair. President of Chaarghat Press Club Mozammel Haque, Headmaster of Khordagovindapur High School Rashidul Hassan, Assistant Headmaster of Jhikra High School Abdul Bari and Area Coordinator of THPB Subrata Kumar Paul also spoke, reports BSS.
