Sundarbans Day observed in coastal districts
KHULNA: Sundarbans Day was observed in the costal districts including Khulna today in befiting manner aiming to raise awareness among people about the importance of protecting the world’s largest mangrove forest. With a slogan,” Loves Sundarban on the Valentine’s Day” the day is unofficially observed on February 14 every year since 2001 with various programmes. Different organisations in the coastal districts of Khulna, Bagerhat, and Satkhira observed various programmes to mark the day. Jointly organised by the Department of Forest and Sundarban Academy, a discussion meeting was held at the Jatisangha Shishu Park with divisional commissioner of Khulna Md. Abdus Samad was in the chair. Parliament member of Khulna-2 constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan addressed the meeting as chief guest while chairman of Khulna zila parisad Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid, Conservator of Forest Zaheer Uddin Ahmed, KU Professor Dr. Deelip Dutta, President of Khulna Press Club S M Habib, Chief of Party of USAID Gray F Kolinse and West Divisional Forest Officer Md. Sayeed Ali, among others. Earlier, a colourful procession led by the deputy commissioner of Khulna brought out from Royal intersection and ended at Jatisangha Shishu Park after parading different streets in the city. Later, the chief guest distributed prize among winners of children art competition and debate competition. The Sundarban is the country’s only natural tiger habitat and a popular tourism spot with its attractive mangrove landscape. It is the largest reserve forest for tigers and a place of unique ecosystem, flora and fauna.
Workshop on Industrial entrepreneurship dev ends
NARSINGDI: A five-day long training workshop on the “Industrial Entrepreneurship Development” concluded here on Wednesday. The workshop was organized by National Association of Small and Cottage Industry Bangladesh (NASCIB) in association with the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Foundation. Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Mohammad Mozammal Hoque attended the concluding session of the workshop as chief guest with President of NASCIB Narsingdi district Al-Haj Mohammad Nural Hoque in the chair. It was also addressed, among others, by Director of Narsingdi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Al-Haj Mominur Rahman, Former Member Secretary of NASCIB Al-Haj Rostam Ali, former Director of Narsingdi Chamber of Commerce Abdul Qudas, and Extension officer of BACIC Mosheraf Hossain. A total of 30 entrepreneurs of the district took part in the five-day workshop. Chief guest Mozzamal Hoque said Bangladesh is progressing towards huge development in industrial sector. He said there is no alternative to develop Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) for socio-economic progress of the country as well as development of industrial sector, reports BSS.
Manikganj youth jailed for 10 yrs for raping minor boy
MANIKGANJ: A youth was found guilty of raping a five-year-old boy by a court here recently and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Additional District and Sessions Judge Al Mahmud Fayjul Kabir handed down the verdict and also fined convict Shipon Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer another two months’ imprisonment. According to the case statement, Shipon, son of Azizur Khan of Tangopalnagar in Singair upazila, raped the little boy on August 11, 2015. Later, the grandmother of the victim filed a case against the convict on August 18 of the same year with the Manikganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Court. The court received the chargesheet in the case on March 12, 2016. After cross-examining the evidence and witnesses, the court pronounced the judgement, reports UNB.
