Housewife commits suicide in Panchagarh
PANCHAGARH: A housewife committed suicide by hanging herself at Nuton Bandar village under Debiganj upazila of the district on Monday night. The victim was Farida Begum, 30, wife of Kamal of the same village. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue. Officer-in-charge of Debiganj Police Station Aminur Rahman said the cause of suicide could not be known immediately. An unnatural death (UD) case was filed with concerned police station, reports BSS.
5 honoured with Joyeeta award
KHULNA: A total of five successful women were accorded a reception under 5 categories in Khulna division yesterday here for their outstanding performances. Khulna Divisional administration in cooperation with the Department of District Women Affairs organised the programme. Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdus Samad addressed the function as the chief guest with additional divisional commissioner(general) Md. Faruk Hossain in the chair. Deputy commissioner of Khulna Nazmul Ahsan, ex-Vice Principal of Government B L College Professor Zafar Imam, Public Prosecutor(PP) of Women and Children Tribunal Aloka Nanda Das addressed it as special guests while District Women Affairs Officer Nargis Fatema Zamin delivered the welcome speech. These women were awarded the title ‘Joyeeta’ by the government. Joyeeta Onneshone Bangladesh-a government initiative introduced in 2011-has had a tremendous impact on the society on women empowerment issue. Grassroots women have responded well to the initiative, showing a positive indicator of women’s empowerment, said speakers at the programme. Each of the awardees received cash Taka, a crest, scarf and a certificate in recognition of their achievements. Among the recipients, Jubaida Nazneen Dolly from Avaynagar upazila in Jessore received the award under economic success category, Nasima Khatun from Rupsha upazila in Khulna received in education and service catagory, Razia Begum from Fultala in Khulna as successful mother, Bilkis Aktari from Jessore in prevention of repression and Kanan Bala Gupta from Narail in social development, awarded as best ‘Joyeeta’ at the divisional level, reports BSS. .
World Betar Day celebrated in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: The World Betar Day-2017 was celebrated here today in a befitting manner with a vow to reach the emergency massages of the Bangladesh Betar to the doorsteps of the hard-to-reach and high risk communities. Marking the day, officials and artists of Rajshahi Betar brought out a rally. Representatives and staff of Community Radio Padma and Mohananda also joined the rally. After parading different streets, the rally ended at Betar Bhaban where a discussion and a cultural function were held. Akhter Jahan, MP, addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Hassan Akhter, Regional Director of Betar, in the chair. Principal of Curt Degree College Professor Shafiqur Rahman Badsha, Freedom Fighter Muhammad Ali Kamal and political leader Abdullah Al Masud also spoke. The speakers said the community radio could be an important medium to provide information at grassroots level as it can provide necessary information, reports BSS.
BD boy returns spending 21 months in Indian jail
CHUADANGA: A Bangladeshi teenage boy returned home through Darshana check-post on Monday, after languishing in an Indian prison for 21 months. The returnee was identified as Sanjiban Biswas, 17, son of Sonaton Biswas, a resident of Teghoria village in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah district. Sources at Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said Border Security Force (BSF) handed over him to BGB in the afternoon after holding a flag meeting. Indian police arrested Sanjiban on June 11, 2015 on charge of intrusion. Later, he was sent to Krishnanagar Juvenile Detention Centre, reports UNB.
‘Criminal’ held with pistol, bullet in Benapole
BENAPOLE: Police arrested a suspected criminal along with one pistol and one bullet from Rajbari village here yesterday. The arrestee was identified as Sekandar Ali, son of Kalu Sheikh of the village. Tipped off, a team of police went to the village and arrested Sekander around 12:30am, said Apurbo Hasan, officer-in-charge of Benapole Port Police Station. Sekander was wanted in several cases, including of two murders, the OC added, reports UNB.
