11 dwelling houses gutted in Barguna

BARGUNA : At least 11 dwelling houses were gutted in a devastating fire at Bebaziakhali-Jamaddarbari village under Bamna upazila of the district last night.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit from a house around 12.30 am and soon engulfed the adjacent houses, fire service sources said.Firemen with the help of locals brought the flame under control.No actual financial losses were so far known although house owners claimed that the loss may surpass Taka one crore, reports BSS.

Field-day on lentil held in Faridpur

FARIDPUR: A field-day for the farmers on a new variety of lentil developed by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) was held in Ishubpur village under Sadar upazila of the district on Friday.The new variety of Lentil known as BARI-7 developed by local scientists of Pulses Research Institute of Gazipur and other concerned organizations of agriculture department gives an yield of 25 percent to 30 percent more than the conventional lentil, the senior scientists of the department related with the research told the farmers.The scientists further told the farmers that this new BARI-7 is an insects resistant variety.They urged the farmers to use new variety seed of lentil for boosting production as well economic benefit., reports BSS.

Two killed in Natore road accident

NATORE: Two fish traders were killed and seven others injured in a road accident in Airmari Bridge area on Bonpara-Haticumrul highway under Baraigram upazila of the district yesterday morning. The deceased were identified as Fulchand Mian,40, son of Korban Ali of Char Tetulia village under Bhuapur upazila of Tangail and Abdus Shahid,37,son of Abdul Hakim of Harua village in Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh.Officer-in-Charge of Bonpara Highway Police Station G M Shamshunnoor said the accident occurred when a speedy truck hit a standing pick-up van carrying at least 10 fish traders around 5 am, leaving two dead on the spot and seven others injured, reports BSS

Suspected thief lynched in Munshiganj

MUNSHIGANJ: A suspected thief was killed in a lynch-mob attack at Balashur village in Sreenagar upazila early Saturday. The deceased was identified as Md Laku Sarker, 32, son of Joynal Sarker of Uttar Balashur village of Rarikhal union. Md Saidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sreenagar Police Station, said Laku entered the house of one Md Yunus of the village and tried to steal valuables early in the morning. As Yunus’s son Rajib he tried to obstruct him he stabbed Rajib with sharp weapon.. Hearing Rajib’s scream, villagers rushed in and caught Laku. They beat him up mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital, reports UNB.

Bottle gourd farming on fisheries lands gaining popularity

SATKHIRA: Bottle gourd farming on fallow lands of fisheries is gaining popularity in the district due to its less production cost. “The abandoned lands beside fisheries are fertile, which is the main reason behind the growing production of this vegetable,” said farmer Ayub Ali Sana of Kamarali village in Kalaroa upazila. He said they are cultivating bottle gourds on such lands throughout the year and they even do not need to use any pesticide as these places are free from insects. Each gourd is now selling in between Tk 20 to Tk 40, Ayub Ali said adding that it is possible to produce gourds worth about Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 per acre.
Kazi Abdul Mannan, Deputy Director at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office of the district, said this time farmers cultivated bottle gourds on about 741.316 acres of land of the 1606.18 of fallow lands in fisheries.
