Indonesia, Japan to step up maritime security

Indonesia and Japan have agreed to step up maritime security and start discussions on a major railway project to link the Southeast Asian nation’s capital and second-biggest city, the leaders of both countries said on Sunday.
Japan has historically been one of Indonesia’s biggest investors, but was dealt a blow in 2015 when President Joko Widodo’s government awarded China a high-speed train project linking Jakarta with the city of Bandung in West Java.

Three militants killed in Kashmir

Three militants were killed in an overnight gun battle with soldiers in a village in Indian Kashmir, an army spokesman said Monday.
Rajesh Kalia said troops cordoned off the village near the tourist resort of Pahalgam after receiving a tip that fighters were hiding out in a private home there.
“On specific intelligence army soldiers cordoned off the village on Sunday evening and the gun battle started,” Kalia told AFP.

Man on FBI’s most-wanted list arrested

A man placed on the FBI’s list of 10 most-wanted fugitives after authorities said he killed two men in Milwaukee was arrested Sunday in Texas, the FBI said. Terry A.D. Strickland, 24, was arrested in El Paso and booked into the jail. He has been charged in Milwaukee with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Bomb blasts at Nigerian varsity kill 5

Two bombs exploded at dawn Monday at Nigeria’s northeastern University of Maiduguri, killing at least five people, witnesses and police said. The first blast ripped through the mosque where professors were saying dawn prayers and at least one is among victims, according to a student. The second bomb went off at an entrance gate, said a university worker. Both spoke on condition of anonymity for their safety.
