Day long classical music competition and festival ended at Barisal on Friday night to promote fundamental bases and practices of pure, correct and true music. Ustad Binoy Krishna Das Memorial Trust (UBKDMT) in assistances with Tansen Music School (TMS) organised the programme at Barisal Ashwini Kumar Hall of the city from Friday morning to late night. The programme was inaugurated by Bijoy Krishna Dey, president of TMS and presided over by Dr. Gazi Md. Saifuzzaman, deputy commissioner Barisal and president of the trust. Among others Prof. Biplob Kumar Bhattyacharya, secretary Barisal Education Board, as chief guest, Advocate S M Iqbal, president Barisal Sangskritk Sangothan Samanya Parishad (BSSSP), Mohiuddin Manik Bir Protik, freedom fighter, as special guests, Priyo Lal Das, Sanjib Karmakar, vice president and secretary of TMS, Mizanur Rahman Mizan, secretary BSSSP, Binoy Bhushan Mandol, Mintu Kumar Kar, organisers, addressed the programme.In the programme Pundit Patit Pabon Natray for playing musical instruments like Tabla, Pakhoyaj and practicing classical music, Ustad Santosh Kumar Karmakar, for his contribution in expanding practice of classical music, were awarded for their lifetime achievements with crest and credentials. In the programme awards were given among the successful competitors of classical music, instruments and Nazrul Sangeet, judged by Pandit Patit Pabon Natray, Ustad Santosh Kumar Karmakar, Ustad Ganesh Chandra Roy and Tapan Devnath.

Sylhet District Ijtema has ended with Akheri Munajat seeking world peace, stability and divine blessings for humankind on Saturday around 11:33am. Maulana Robiul Haque conducted the prayers. Thousands of Muslims from home and abroad gathered at the District Ijtema grounds in Sylhet-Sunamongj Bypass of Dakshin Surma to join in the Akheri Munajat. The 1st Ijtema of Sylhet District to be attended by devotees from 10 other districts, would be held on December 29-31. A huge number of devotees gathered at the Ijtema venue yesterday by bus, train and other vehicles.
The Sylhet District Tabligh Jamaat Organisers said, adding that the devotees would continue to come until this morning. The organisers said the gathering would not be huge like before. a special chamber has been set up beside the main stage where the interested devotees can write their names to be with the Tabligh Jamaat for a certain time.
Road accident kills one in Panchagarh
PANCHAGARH: A tractor driver was killed in a road accident at Okrabari area under Debiganj upazila of the district on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was Kayum, 22, son of Monu Miah of Nischedpur village under Thakurgaon district. Eyewitness said that when a brick laden tractor reached at Okrabari area the driver lost control over his steering and the tractor falls into roadside ditch. The driver was critically injured. Locals rushed him to Debiganj Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead. The body was kept at Hospital for autopsy, reports BSS.
Cost-free health camp in Munshiganj
MUNSHIGANJ: A day-long free of cost health camp and medicine distribution programme was held at the house of Professor Dr Mohammad Jahangir Alam in Sadar upazila of the district on Friday. The health camp was organized with the cooperation of Bangladesh National Medical College Hospital and Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Professor Dr Mohammad Jahangir Alam inaugurated the programme. Over 500 patients were provided with treatment and medicines at the camp. At the outset of the programme, an awareness building meeting on different diseases was held, reports BSS.
Faridpur economic census report released
FARIDPUR :Local statistics office here on Tuesday unfolded the Economic Census Report-2013 of Faridpur at a formal meeting held in the conference room of deputy commissioner (DC). Deputy director (DD) of the department Minakkhi Biswas presented the report in multi-media depicting key features of economic ctivities of the district. Deputy Commissioner Umme Salma Tanzia was the chief guest at the function with ADC (Gen) Protap Chandra Biswas in the chair. The report contains various important aspects including the number of establishment by type, total persons engaged(TPE) by type establishments, TPE by sex, head of establishments by sex, female headed establishments, shares of establishments by location, working status of TPE by sex, 2013, major economic activities in urban and rural areas.The DD also focused on the registration status of the establishments, manufacturing establishments by selected working facilities, head of establishments by level of education, 2013.In the presentation, the DD also showed the economic activities with all details of the upazilas of this district. The DD disclosed that the first economic census was done in 1986 and the second in 2001-2003.
The presentation also pointed out the comparative situation of economic census of previous times with the present one. The remarkable change took place in the field of the involvement of female in the economic activities was also focused in the presentation.
The presentation over, an open discussion was held on the census report. ADC (Education & ICT) Eradul Haque, Additional Police Super Md. Kamruzzaman Russel, Awami League leader Advocate Subal Chandra Saha, BSS Correspondent Prof. Shahjahan, Prof. Nurul Islam and NGO activist Asma Akhtar Mukta, among others, participated in the discussion, reports BSS.
