Dope gangs active in Sylhet again

Dope gangs have recently been desperate again to rob people of money and other valuables in the Sylhet and elsewhere despite action against the criminals. Locals said many gangsters are roaring in the streets to loot money and other valuables, raising concern among the public. Nowadays, the crime has become a common phenomenon as many fall prey to the gangs and lose their valuables and even lives. Though police arrested some gang members, they have become active again after getting release on bail from jail, sources said. Intelligence agencies said dope gangsters are active in at least 20 spots in the Sylhet. ”gyan Party” (dope gang) members make their targets unconscious by feeding them sedatives or using poisonous ointments in their eyes. Later, they took away their money and other valuables. Sources at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital (OMCH) said at least 2-3 victims take treatment at hospital every day after being robbed of their possessions. The places where the criminals are active are Surma point, Kinbridge Mour, Sylhet Railway Station, Kadamtoli, Court point, Terminal and Amberkhana area. During preliminary interrogations, the arrestees confessed they travel on public vehicles in guise of commuters and commit the crime, said DB joint commissioner Sylhet. ”We also recovered medicine, ointments and some other items used to make people unconscious,” he added.
Housewife killed by ‘husband’ in Pirojpur
PIROJPUR: A housewife was hacked to death allegedly by her husband at Masimpur in the district town on Friday. The deceased was identified as Asma Begum, 26, wife of Rezaul Islam of Tala upazila in Satkhira district. Quoting local people, police said Rezaul along with his wife Asma and nine labourers rented a house owned by Rupa Begum in the area eight months ago and used to live there. On Friday morning, Alamgir, an inmate of the house, found Asma lying in a pool of blood in the room while her husband missing. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to sadar hospital morgue, said Masumur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station. Police detained nine labourers living with the couple for interrogation.
39,576 blankets distributed in Jamalpur
JAMALPUR: The Upazila administrations of the district distributed 39,576 pieces of blankets among the cold-hit poor people in seven upazilas. According to District Relief and Rehabilitation Office, of the blankets 5,401 in Dewanganj, 6,599 in Islampur, 7,018 in Jamalpur sadar, 5,045 in Madarganj, 5,965 in Melandaha, 5,109 in Sarishabari and 4,439 pieces in Bakshiganj upazila were distributed. Sources said 46,485 pieces of blankets were allotted in the district for distribution among the cold hit poor people. Allotted 20,600 blankets are from Prime Minister’s Relief fund and 25,885 blankets are from Relief and Disaster Management Department, reports BSS.
Youth held with gold bars at Hili border

A youth named Golam Rabbani of Rashidpur village under Panchbibi upazila has been arrested with 4 golden bars worth taka 25 lakh while the BGB personnel challenged him on Wednesday noon. Chan Mia, BGB commander of Basudebpur camp said he was crossing road of frontier on riding motor bike and the BGB personnel on secret information challenged him. A case has been lodged with Hakimpur police station in this regard.
Bicyclist crushed under wheels of tank lorry in Jhenaidah

An unknown bicyclist was crushed under the wheels of a speeding gas laded tank lorry near Srilakkhi cinema hall in Kaliganj upazila head quarters on Friday morning. The identity of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately. Kaliganj police station officer in charge Aminul Islam said, the bicyclist was marching towards Nimtala bus stoppage in the town. At about 10.-00 AM when he arrived near the cinema hall. A gas laden tank lorry from the opposite direction crushed him to dead on the spot. A case was filed with Kaliganj police station in this connection and the body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar hospital morgue for post mortem examination.
