A motorcyclist was killed on spot and his associate sustained injuries when a Hatfazilpzur bound bus hit a Jhenaidahbound motorbike near Bhatai Bazer on Jhenaidah-Kushtia highway in Sailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah on Tuesday noon. The deceased was identified as Bachchcu Mia, 34, of Kulchara village of same upazila. Locals and Sailkupa police station officer in charge Tarikul Islam said, Bachchu and his associate were marching towards Jhenaidah on a motorbike at about 12.00 noon. When they arrived near the spot, a Hatfazilpur bound local bus met a head on collision leaving the two injured. They were rescued and sent to Jhenaidah Sadar hospital and the attending physician declared Bachchu dead. The police detained the bus while the killer driver managed to flee. A case was filed and the body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar hospital morgue for post mortem examination, officer in charge said.
Former Shibir leader held in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: A former leader of Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir was arrested from Old Satkhira area in the district on Monday night. The arrested was identified as Omar Faraque, 40, son of Mohammad Abdullah of Sadar upazila. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar thana Firoz Hossain said, acting on secret information, an operation team of the police raided the Old Satkhirai area and arrested Omar Faraque. Police said the Shibir leader is accused in several cases, reports BSS.
Expansion of nine degree colleges progressing in Chuadanga
CHUADANGA: The expansion of academic buildings of nine degree colleges in four upazilas of the district is now progressing satisfactorily at a total cost of Taka 10 crore and 93 lakh. The work on the project included the expansion of academic buildings of Chuadanga Pourashava Degree College, Dr. Afsaruddin Degree College, Barasholua Degree College, Hardi Zoha Degree College, Nigar-Siddique Degree College, Kashkorora Degree College, Wadud Shah Degree College, Jibannagar Degree College and Utholi Degree College. So far about 70 percent work on the project has been completed and the rest of the work is expected to be accomplished by June next. On completion of the schemes, accommodation problems of 2000 students of all these degree colleges of the district would be solved. The Education Engineering Department of the Ministry of Education is implementing the schemes, reports BSS.
3 held with pistol in Chandpur
CHANDPUR: Police arrested three young men along with one foreign pistol and two rounds of bullets from Khajuria Beribandh area in Matlab (North) upazila on Monday. The arrestees were identified as Masun Hossain, 22, M Riad, 18, and Himel, 18, all residents of the area. Officer-in-charge of Matlab (North) Police Station Alamgir Hossain said tipped off, a team of the law enforcers conducted a drive in the area and arrested the trio while they were staying there in the afternoon. The law enforcers also recovered one foreign pistol and two rounds of bullets from their possession.
A case was filed against them in this connection, the OC added, reports UNB.
