Indian wild elephants damage crops, houses in Kurigram border

A herd of Indian wild elephant entered into Bangladesh territory crossing Khearchar frontier damaged crops land and houses under Roumari upazila in Kurigram district for two days back. The villagers became afraid following the incident and after beating drum and burning large candle (Moshal) waiting sleepless whole night the elephants went into India early hours on Monday. The villagers said a herd of Indian wild elephant entered into Bangladesh crossing international main pillar No 1076 near Kalier char. Later, they damaged paddy and mustard field on 10 acres of land and houses in the border adjoining villages like Alger Char, Lathial danger char, Khearchar and Jhaibari Char, Local UP member of Khearchar area Haider Ali told that the herd of elephant came from Baldanggiri and Garohill of India adjacent of Roumari frontier. The wild elephant entered into Bangladesh territory and damaged crops field now and then. Officer of Forest Department of Roumari Upazila Iqbal Hossain told that hearing the news of entering wild elephant it announced to keep alert of the villagers. The Indian elephants entered into Bangladesh territory now and then in search of food, he added.
Inter- dist robber gang leader held

The detective branch police in Jhenaidah have arrested an inter- district robber gang leader from Karaitala area on Jhenaidah -Jessore Highway in the mid night of Tuesday. The police also- recovered a pistol from his possession. The arrested was Ripon Hossain Babu, son of Rezaul Islam of Patibila village in Kaliganj upazila. The police said, the DB men conducted a drive in the midnight having information that a gang of robbers were preparing to commit robbery on the road. Sensing the police presence the cohorts of Babu managed to flee, while Babu was caught with a pistol. A case was fields with Jhenaidah Sadar police station and he was sent to court.
