Thakurgaon liberated today

The freedom fighters along with the allied forces bravely liberated Thakurgaon town from the clutches of the Pakistan occupation forces on December 3 in 1971. District Muktijoddha Sangshad and different organisations will celebrate tomorrow Thakurgaon Freedom Day through various colourful programmes. According to Deputy Commander of Thakurgaon District Muktijoddha Sangshad Abdul Mannan, Thakurgaon remained free up to April 14 as the Pakistani occupation forces could not enter the town following stiff resistance of the freedom fighters. “But on April 15, the occupation forces entered Thakurgaon with heavy armaments. At that situation, the freedom fighters took positions in occupation-free Tentulia frontier areas,” he said. Former Commander of Ranisonkoil Upazila Muktijoddha Sangshad Sirajul Islam said that Thakurgaon was under Sector no- 6 during the War of Liberation under command of Sector Commander Squadron Leader M. Khademul Bashar. “When victory was gradually becoming imminent, the Pakistani occupation forces began to retreat. On November 29, Panchagarh Thana was liberated, then the occupation forces set up their camp at the then Thakurgaon EPR camp,” he said. During the retreat, the occupation forces blew up Bhulli Bridge on November 30 and laid many underground mines at Salandar area near Thakurgaon town to create hindrance to entrance of the freedom fighters.
Sylhet jailor injured by life-term prisoner

Sylhet District Central Jailor Masud Parvez has been seriously injured while working in his office on Thursday morning.
It has been learnt from Sylhet Prison hand out, Masud Parvez Moyeen, the Chief Jail Guard and Sylhet Jail Intelligence Chief, was calculating and marking the attendance of all prisoners. At that time Promud Ranjan Das, a life-term prisoner and guilty of murder, was sitting in the line. Before understanding anything the said Promud with an iron pipe hit upon the head of Masud Parvez Moyeen, resulting in Mr. Masud grievous injured. Other prisoners came forward and rescued him and sent him to Sylhet M.A.G Osmani Medical College Hospital where he has been undergoing treatment in Cabin No. 11.
Robbers loot gold ornaments, cash in Kaliganj

A gang of robbers in the early hours of Thursday looted gold ornaments from a house of a transgender, widely known as Hijra at Chapali village of Kaliganj municipality. Two Hijra persons were injured when the robbers beaten up the community people, they said. Hijra Khairunnessa said, she along with another of her associate Asmani was sleeping in their house at Chapali village. In the early hours, a gang of robbers numbering 7 to 8 entered in to the house and stated looting the valuables sin the house. As Khairaunnessa and Asmani tried to protect the valuables, they had beaten up both of them leaving them injured.
Advocacy meet on sexual repression held in Mymensingh
MYMENSINGH: An advocacy meeting to eradicate sexual repression on women was held at the auditorium of Zila Parishad Shahid Abdul Jabber auditorium here on Thursday. Gender Justice and Diversity division of Non Government Organization (NGO) BRAC arranged it with a view to eradicating sexual repression and their safety for making peaceful and women friendly society. Deputy Commissioner of the district Md Khaliur Rahman was present as the chief guest. Additional Police Super S A Nawazee, district women affairs officer Mosirun Nesa, Manager of Gender Justice and diversity of BRAC Anjumanara Begum and Dr Shab uddin were spoke on the occasion, reports BSS.
