Exhib on environment friendly oven ends

A three-day long exhibition of environment friendly fuel cost effective oven (chula) and cooking competition ended at Barisal Thursday night.The progamme with daily open-air cultural shows held at Bangobondhu Udyan of the city.On the ending day, prizes were distributed among the successful competitors of the cooking competition.Infrastructural Development Company Limited (IDCOL) with the help of World Bank organized the programme supported by USAID, German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), and Desh Gori, for making practice of environment friendly and cost effective but energy efficient ovens in the country to fight with climate change adaptations.The programme was organised to replace the present traditional country-ovens (chula) to an environment friendly, conomic, cost effective but energy efficient ovens within 2030 as per country action plan designed by the government, said Jibunnessa Begum, executive director Desh Gori.A discussion meeting about the arrangements of the programme was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner of Barisal on Monday last. The exhibition, cooking competition and cultural functions draws huge competitors, attentions and praises of audiences every day.Members of law enforcing agencies, Bangladesh Girl Guides Association, performed the duty of maintaining discipline at the programme.
14 gamblers arrested in Sylhet

Police arrested 14 gamblers from Kazirbazar area of Sylhet City on Friday. The arrestees were identified as Kamal, 25, Jahed Ahmed, 20, Sojib, 20, Ripon Kha, 25, Tipu Sultan, 27, Sujat Ahmed, 45, Mostak, 25, Sawkot, 19 , Jahangir, 25, Rayhan, 18, Jewel, 37, Kabir, 25, Russell, 27 and Rashid, 40, according to a news agency report. Sources said, locals informed the police that some people were gambling at Kazirbazar area. Receiving information, a team of police raided the “Tire Slung gambling centre” in the area at around 1:00pm and arrested them with gambling instruments. Sohel Ahmad, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali model police station, said they have evicted four illegal gambling centres.
Bumper onion production bring no smile to Faridpur farmers
FARIDPUR: Bumper production of onion in the district turns out to be a curse for farmers and traders as consignments of imported onions from India are flooding the market. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), 3,33,286 tonnes of onion has been produced in the district in the current season, up by 30,000 tonnes compared to the output of last year. During a visit to the local wholesale markets, our Faridpur correspondent found out a dearth of customers in spite of the arrival of a good amount of freshly harvested onions. Habibur Rahman, a farmer from Atghar upazila, said they are failing to collect the production cost due to the price fall, reports UNB.
