34 held on various charges in Satkhira
SATHKHIRA: Police, in special drives from Thursday night to this morning, arrested 34 persons on various charges from seven upazilas of the district. Sources with the district police said they were picked up from different areas of the district. During the drives, Satkhira Sadar police arrested 14 accused, Kalaroa police 5, Tala police 3, Kaliganj police 3 , Shyamnagar police 2, Assasuni police 5 and Debhata police 2 accused. Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added, reports BSS.
Mobile court convicts two drug peddlers in Faridpur
FARIDPUR: A mobile court here sentenced two drug peddlers to six months jail each for carrying hemp in the town on Thursday. A team of narcotics control department, led by Inspector Bimol Chandra Biswas, conducted the raids on Thursday at different places of the town and arrested drug peddlers Mahbubul Imam,45 from the red light area and Kajol Shaikh, 25 from Laksmipur area of this town. The team also recovered half a kilogram of hemp from them. Later, the arrested drug peddlers were produced before the mobile court of Executive Magistrate Mondip Ghorai, who sentenced them to 6 months jail each for carrying hemp, reports BSS.
Week long eye camp held in Faridpur
FARIDPUR: A week long eye- camp concluded here at Bhanga Upazilla headquarters on Thursday. The eye camp was organized by Highlight Foundation, a local non-government organization. Md Shahidul Islam, Chairman of the foundation, said 21 patients were operated upon for setting Intra-Ocular lens (IOL) during the weeklong camp. Besides, some 100 patients were given various eye treatment at the camp held at the upazilla health complex. UNO Hassan Habib, upazilla health and family planning officer Dr. Md. Abdullah and upazilla vice-chairman Monowara Aktar Popy were present on the concluding day, reports BSS.
Huge fish poisoned to death in Jessore
BENAPOLE: Miscreants poisoned huge fish, worth about Tk one lakh, to death in an enclosure at Teghori village in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore district on Thursday. Locals said Selim Hossain of the village had long been cultivating fish in the fish enclosure on 60 decimals of land. Selim said he found dead fishes floating in the water body on Thursday night. Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Keshabpur Police Station, said miscreants poured poison in the water body, killing the fish out of enmity, reports UNB.
‘Drug peddler’ gets life term imprisonment in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A tribunal here has convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for possessing drugs. The convict was identified as Ashraful Alam, 23, son of Maksed Ali of Chapra area in Tanore upazila. The tribunal also fined him Tk 10,000. According to the prosecution, a team of Puthia unit Narcotics Control Department in a drive arrested Ashraful Alam along with 35 bottles of Phensidyl from a bus on Rajshahi-Natore highway in Puthia upazila on March 13, 2015. A case was then filed with Puthia Police Station. After examining records and six witnesses, Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge AKM Shaheed Ahmed pronounced the verdict on Thursday, reports UNB.
Touchstone statue recovered in Munshiganj
MUNSHIGANJ :Local people have recovered a touchstone-made statue from a graveyard at Jorardeul in Sadar upazila. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Suraiya Jahan said local people recovered the statue, weighing 20 kg, from the graveyard while digging a grave on Thursday morning. The statue was handed over to the local administration, reports UNB.
