An Istanbul court on Saturday remanded in custody ahead of trial nine staff from the opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper, in an intensifying crackdown a day after the leaders of the country’s main pro-Kurdish party were also jailed.
There had been growing international alarm over the use of a state of emergency implemented in the wake of the failed July 15 coup against critics of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
NDTV ban shocking, says Rahul

The Congress today hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the widely condemned one-day ban on NDTV India, with Rahul Gandhi calling it “shocking and unprecedented”.
“Detaining opposition leaders, blacking out TV channels- all in a day’s work in Modiji’s India. NDTV Banned-shocking and unprecedented (sic),” Mr Gandhi commented on Twitter.
The main opposition party said the government’s action smacked of “authoritarianism and intimidation”.
Three US troops shot dead in Jordan

Three US troops were killed in a shooting outside a military training facility in Jordan on Friday, the Pentagon said.
An initial report showed they came under fire as they were entering the facility in vehicles, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said.
“We are working closely with the government of Jordan to determine exactly what happened,” he said in a statement.
