Hilsa fishing resumes after end of 22-day restriction

Hilsa netting resumes Thursday November 3, 2016 after a 22-day restriction imposed by the directorate of fisheries against catching Hilsa enforced from October 12 ended. The 22-day ban against fishing was imposed to boost hilsa resources by ensure safe spawning as well as proper breeding environment and shelter the mother fish from any disturbance, said Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery officer (hilsa) Bazlur Rashid, Barisal divisional officer and deputy director of fishery department, claimed the imposed ban against netting, marketing, and transportation of Hilsa across observed successfully across the division. The success of the ban proved by less punitive actions against the violators and netting more amount of Hilsa in non-ban period than previous year, he added.However some fishermen yet to get VGF rice, because of mismanagement of local union parishads, Bazlur Rashid, deputy director fishery acknowledged. During the 22-day restriction period, 1844 anti-hilsa-netting drives, 942 mobile courts were operated, 3949 Kg Hilsa seized, 29.27 lakhs meter net recovered and burnt, 357 cases lodged, 273 fishermen jailed and 12.07 lakhs taka realised as fine for violating the ban , said Azizul Huq, assistant director at Barisal office of fishery department .
7 jail guards closed for assaulting UP Chairman in Jessore

The jail authority has closed seven guards of Jessore Central Jail for allegedly assaulting a Union Parishad (UP) chairman of Bagherpara upazila on Wednesday. The closed jail guards are: Sagor Islam, Shahidullah Mir, Hiron Mridha, Faruq Hossain, Masum Billah, Hossain and Liakat. Abu Taleb, jailer of Jessore Central Jail, confirmed this on Wednesday, saying they were after initial investigation involving the analysis of footage recorded by Close Circuit Television (CCTV) camera. He also noted that a three-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the assault on Jahurpur Union Porishad chairman Dilu Patoary of Bagherpara upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
 National Youth Day observed in Baraigram

National Youth Day was obsered in Baraigram on last Tuesday. On the occasion, a rally and a discussion meeting were arranged. The meeting was presided over by UNO Ishrath Farzana. Parliament Member (PM) Prof. Abdul Kuddus was present as a chief guest. It was also addressed among others by Upazila Awami League President Abdul Jalil Pramanik, Upazila Education Officer Mst. Sirajum Munira, Jubo Unnayan Officer Md Umirul Islam, Nagar Union Parishad Chairman Nilufer Yesmin Dalu. The chief guest Prof. Abdul Kuddus (PM) distributed cheques of 60 lakh and 60 thousand among 21 young men.
Special security measures taken for Rash Mela

Law enforcement agencies have taken special security measures for preventing the poaching of wild animals and subversive activities ahead of the famous three-day ‘Rash Mela’ at Dublar Char Island near the Sundarbans, beginning from November 12. Six teams of law enforcing agencies including Coast Guard agencies will remain on alert round-the-clock to capture the poachers who will try to enter the venue of Rash Mela in the guise of devotees and prevent any kind of militant activities, said Zonal Commander of Bangladesh Coast Guard (West Zone) Captain Mohammad Ali . Speaking at a press conference at his office on Wednesday, Capt Ali said members of the Navy, police, coast guard, border guard and Rab will be deploy in the area to avert any subversive activity. Besides, three mobile courts will conduct drives in Dublar Char area during the festival. The law enforcement agencies have selected seven routes as entry into the ‘Rash Mela’. Besides, use of firearms, music, sound system will be prohibited in this year’s ‘Rash Mela’.

35 held on various charges in Satkhira
SATHKHIRA: Police in special drives last night arrested 35 accused on various charges from seven upazilas of the district and seized yaba tablets. Police said, during the drives, Satkhira Sadar police arrested 17 accused, Kalaroa police 4, Tala police 3, Kaliganj police 3, Shyamnagar police 5, Patkelghata police one, Assasuni police one and Debhata police arrested one accused.
Patkelghata Thana police also seized 70 pieces yaba tablets during the drives, police said.
Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added, reports BSS.
