Arms trader held with pistol in C’nawabganj

An arms trader was arrested by members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 with a pistol, two magazines and three bullets from Dadanchak-Dholpara village under Shibganj upazila of the district on Saturday evening. The arrested person was identified as M Monirul Islam Monu, 35, resident of the same area.On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid in the area and arrested Monu with the firearm and ammunition, one RAB official said. A case was filed with Shibganj Thana in this connection.
Boat race held on Sandhya River

On the occasion of Laxmi Puja, the 156 years old traditional ‘Laxmi Puja Nauka Baich’ (Boat-Race) was held on the river Sandhaya at Harta in Uzirpur upazila of Barisal district to patronize indigenous sports and rural traditional regional culture. The ‘Laxmi Puja Nouka Baich’ was organized by Harta Bazaar Committee to celebrate the Puja on Saturday afternoon, said Dr. Harendranath Roy, Harta UP chairman and president of the arrangement committee and ceremony. Thousands of people including high officials of upazila and district administration, local government representatives enjoyed the race and encouraged the participant teams crowding on both sides of the river on boat racing route. The 2 kilometers long Nouka Baich since 1860 started from Harta old union parishad at 4:00 pm and ended at Harta Bazaar Ghat at 5:00 pm Saturday. Eight racing-boat teams including two teams of females from the region participated in the competition.
Discussion meet held in Narsingdi

A post rally discussion meeting was held at Deputy Commissioner’s conference room to marking the World White Cane Safety Day organised by Department of Social Service with the co-operation of District Administration on Saturday. Additional District Magistrate Rahan Uddin addressed the discussion as chief guest with Deputy Director, Department of Social Service (DSS) Narsingdi, Golam Mostafa in the chair. District Register, DSS Sukla Biswas presented the welcome speech on the day. Among others Sadar Upazila Social Welfare Officer Ashraful Islam, Executive Director, PAPRI (NGO) Abu Based, Muktijuddah Azizur Rahman, and Mahamuda Khaton addressed. Speakers said disabled children must be given equal opportunity in institutional education like the privileged ones, so that they grow as worthy citizen and contribute to the country’s development in various fields. The chief guest Rahan Uddin in his speech said the present government is disabled friend government and the government wants to make inclusive society for ensuring education for the children with special needs for establishing fundamental rights of the disabled children in the society. He urged all government and non-government officials to work together for the welfare of disabled persons .
Man electrocuted in Jessore

A man died from electrocution at Shripur village in Manirampur upazila on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Anwar Hossain Khaja, 35, son of Sorir Molla, a resident of the village. Family members said some workers of Palli Bidyut Samity were working in the area at about 11:00 am when Khaja came in contact with a live electric wire while he was passing through the area. Khaja was rushed to Manirampur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
