Field day on harvesting BRRIdhan62 held in Narail
NARAIL: Farmers field-day on harvesting BRRIdhan62 was held at Garochora Secondary School premises under Narail municipality of the district on Thursday. Wahidur Rahman,Deputy director of District Agriculture Extension Department, formally inaugurated the field day as the chief guest. A discussion meeting was also held on the occasion. Wahidur Rahman said Bangladesh has no deficiency in food. “We have achieved self-sufficiency in food, he added. “Now we need nutrition. For this, we need cultivation of the BRRIdhan 62 which has manifold nutritious elements,” the chief guest said. The meeting was addressed, among others, by Assistant Agriculture Extension officer Md Hafizur Rahman, Harvest Plus of Bangladesh Md Mujibur Rahman and rogramme coordinator of the DAE,Saiful Islam, reports BSS.
Father fined for arranging child marriage in Barguna
BARGUNA: A mobile court here fined the father of a girl for arranging the marriage of an underage girl at Gotbaria village under Sadar upazila of the district last night. Sources concerned said the father Mosharaf Hossain arranged the wedding of his daughter of Shela. Being informed, Barguna Thana police reached the spot around 11pm and foiled the wedding, The police arrested father of the girl Mosharaf Hossain for arranging the marriage. Later, the police handed over the arrested father to the mobile court led by Barguna Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Azaharul Islam which fined Mosharraf Hossain for arranging the child marriage. However, the father was released after paying the fine and giving an undertaking that he would refrain from doing similar offences in future, reports BSS.
90 houses under power network in Panchagarh
PANCHAGARH: A total of 90 houses in Debiduba village under Debiganj upazila of the district were brought under rural electrification network by Panchagarh Palli Bidyut Samity on Thursday night. Local lawmaker Advocate Nurul Islam Sujon formally inaugurated the new power supply connections as the chief guest at a function at Debiduba village. Man gets life term for murder in Sherpur
SHERPUR: A court here on Thursday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for killing a man in 2007. The convict was identified as Abul Hossain, 50, son of Bahar Uddin of Shumi Dubarpar village in Sadar upazila. The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer, three months more in rigorous imprisonment. According to the prosecution, Abul Hossain had an enmity with his neighbour Idris Ali over a piece of land. As a sequel to the enmity, Abul Hossain along with his three associates swooped on the house of Idris Ali and attacked on the house inmates on September 25, 2007. They also beat Shahidul Islam, son of Idris Ali up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. Later Shahidul was succumbed to his injuries on September 29, 2007. A case was filed with Sadar Police Station in this connection. Police submitted chargesheet against four people on January 27, 2008. After examining records and witnesses, Sherpur Additional Session Judge Mosleh Uddin handed down the verdict while acquitted three others as allegation brought against them could not be proved, reports UNB .
Nine pirates held in Bhola
BHOLA: Police arrested nine alleged pirates from Urir Char in Manpura upazila on Thursday night. The arrestees were identified as Fakhrul, Manir, Shamsuddin, Shahidul, Sohel, Sohrab, Selim, Rahat and Malek. They all hailed from Hatiya upazila of Noakhali district. Acting on secret information that a gang of pirates were staying in the area, a team of police conducted a drive and arrested them from their hideouts around 8 pm, said Shahin Mandal, officer-in-charge of Manpura Police Station. Police also recovered some sharp weapons from their possession. Later they were taken to the police station in the night, reports UNB.
