33 held on various charges in Satkhira

Police, in special drives, arrested 33 people on various charges from seven upazilas in the district on Friday. Sources with the law enforcement agency said, during the drives, Satkhira Sadar police arrested 10 persons, Kalaroa police seven, Patkelghata police two, Assasuni police two, Tala police four, Kaliganj police four, Shyamnagar police three and Debhata police one person. All of them are accused in several cases pending with different police stations, the sources said. During the drives, police also recovered 10 bottles of contraband drug phensidyl syrup.
Huge smuggled drugs seized from Hili frontier
RANGPUR: Members of Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) today seized huge quantity of smuggled drugs worth Taka 50 lakh from Hili frontiers under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur district, BGB sources said. Basudebpur BGB Camp Commander Subedar Mostafa informed local reporters that a special patrol team of the border guards conducted a raid in Sonapur Bazar area near Hili border and seized 2.50 lakh pieces of smuggled cow-fattening ‘Practin’ tablets worth Taka 50 lakh in an abandoned condition. However, none was arrested during the raid, he added, reports BSS.
Preparations afoot to celebrate Durga Puja

Preparations for celebrating Durga Pauja, the five-day greatest religious festival of the Hindu community, are nearing completion in all the eight upazilas of the district. The festival will start on October 7 and conclude on October 11 through the immersion of the idols on the day of Bijoya Dashami, Puja Udjapon Committee sources said. District Puja Udjapon Committee Secretary Dipankar Das Ratan said almost 90 percent work on Durga Puja idols has already been completed. District administration and Puja Udjapon Committee sources said the puja will be held at 629 mandaps in Sadar, Abhaynagar, Monirampur, Keshabpur, Bagherpara, Chaugachha, Jhikargacha and Sharsha uazilas under the district this year. District Puja Udjapon Committee President Ashim Kundu told BSS that they are happy at the steps being taken by the government for a peaceful celebration of Durga Puja. People have already started visiting different mandaps in the town, upazila headquarters and rural areas of the district, he added.
Initiative taken to make Gaibandha early marriage free by December
GAIBANDHA: District administration has taken an initiative to make Gaibandha district free from early marriage by December next through active participation of all concerned.
According to sources, the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared that Bangladesh would be an early marriage free country by 2021. In line with the announcement of the government, the district administration led by Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad took the initiative to make Gaibandha early marriage free by December. To end this, the district administration is conducting publicity campaign in all the seven upazilas of the district through holding meeting, and distributing leaflets regarding checking early and child marriage to the people. In this context, mayors of the municipalities and the chairmen of union parishads were urged to provide birth registration certificates carefully so that none could resort to forgery in issuing the certificates, said an official of the district administration.
By this time, Sadullapur upazila and a number of unions of the district had already been declared early marriage free upazila and unions, he added. When contacted, DC M. Abdus Samad confirmed the initiative and said on December 16, 2016 this district would be declared formally as the early marriage free district. The DC also sought whole hearted cooperation of all including district and upazila women affairs officer, social service officers, family planning officers, district registrar, district information officer, and the media men to make the initiative a grand success.
