Drugs seized from Hili frontier in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized huge quantity of drugs and cow fattening tablets from Hili rail station under Hakimpur upazila of the district this morning, BGB sources said. The sources said that a special BGB patrol team conducted a sudden raid at Balur Math near hili rail station at around 8 am this morning and seized seven abandoned cartons. After searching the cartons, the BGB members found 822 pieces of yaba tablets, 298 bottles of phensidyl and 30,000 pieces of cow fattening tablets. However, none was arrested in this connection during the raid as the smugglers managed to flee away from the spot sensing the presence of BGB personnel. A case was filed in this connection, the BGB sources said, reports BSS.
36 held in Satkhira
SATHKHIRA: Police in special drives arrested 36 persons from seven upazilas in the district on Thursday. They were picked up from different areas of the district on various charges, police said. During the drive, Satkhira Sadar police arrested 12 persons and Kalaroa police held 6 persons. Besides, Patkelghata police arrested three accused. Police also arrested four persons from Assasuni thana area and two from Tala thana area. Kaliganj police held four persons, Shyamnagar police four persons, and Debhata police one person on different charges during the special raids, reports BSS.
15 Sewing machines distributed in Joypurhat
JOYPURHAT: A total of 15 sewing machines were distributed free of cost among 15 distressed women after providing three months training in Sadar upazila of the district Thursday afternoon. A simple function was held on the occasion at the Sadar upazila Mujibur Rahman Dali auditorium. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is financing the programme and Bikalpa Unnayan Sangstha is implementing it. Bikalpa Unnayan Sangstha and upazila administration distributed the sewing machines under the Ultra Poor Programme (UPP) to make the distressed women self-reliant by involving them with income generating activities. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Aminul Islam, presided over the function. Sadar upazila chairman Alhaj Fazlur Rahman was present as the chief guest while upazila vice-chairman Hasibul Alam Liton, female vice-chairman Jaheda Kamal were present as special guests. President of Bikalpa Unnayan Sangstha Dorba Marandi, Lakhi Rani, journalist Shahadul Islam Saju, among others, spoke on the occasion, reports BSS.
4 held with phensidyl in Faridpur
FARIDPUR: Four drug peddlers were nabbed by Kotwali police on Thursday with 390 bottles of contraband phensidyl from New Bus Stand area of this town. According to police, they had information that a consignment of phensidyl was coming from Jheniedah district on a Nosimon vehicle with straw. Accordingly a police team was sent to the spot. As soon as the drug peddlers found the police van, they tried to flee away with Nosimon and entered into Mollabari Sarak in this town. Finally police chased the Nosimon and nabbed four persons. After search under straw police recovered 390 bottles of phensidyl which were hidden inside a wooden body of the vehicle. The arrested four were identified as Aminur Rahman of jheniedah, Md. Bipul Rahman of jheniedah, Rezaul Biswas of Faridpur Sadar upazilla and Alamgir Mondol of Jessore, reports BSS.
Anti-militancy meet held in Brahmanbaria
BRAHMANBARIA: An anti-militancy meeting was held at Bancharampur Upazila Parishad auditorium of the district on Thursday. Mohammad Shawkat Osman, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), presided over the meeting.
