21 Jamaat-Shibirmen among 54 held in Jhenaidah

Police arrested 54 people, including 21 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir, in a special drive from different parts of the district on Sunday. Azbahar Ali shekh, additional superintendent of police, Jhenidah, said police conducting a drive in different places of the district from Saturday night to early Sunday morning arrested them on sabotage charges. Among the arrestees, there were also 21 Jamaat-Shibir activists while, others were accused in several cases, including for violence, added the ASP. Later they were sent to jail.
Palm tree plantation gets underway in Sherpur
SHERPUR: A massive palm tree plantation programme, aimed at holding on to the heritage of the tropical tree, has got underway in the district recently. The Department of Agricultural Expansion (DAE) has launched the palm tree plantation programme with its start in Nakla upazila. Sherpur DAE deputy director M Ashraf Uddin said they have been planting palm trees in different places, including roadside, graveyard, Eidgah, school, college, madrasah and mosque in the upazila for several days, under the scheme initiated in response to the call of Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury. He added the DAE is implementing the tree plantation programme and 10,000-12,000 palm saplings have been planted in the upazila so far under the project. The DAE sources termed palm tree a cash crop. Both palm juice and the kernel of the fruit have much nutrition value. Shade of palm tree is not to affect any other crops underneath in any way rather than doing benefits, reports UNB.

Journalists society of Sylhet on Saturday took a vow to carry out a strong fight both with their pens and taking to the streets against militancy and terrorism. Speaking at a human chain programme in front of the Sylhet Press Club they also called upon all, irrespective of creed, colour and profession, to put up a strong resistance against communalism and militancy. Sylhet Press Club arranged the programme protesting militancy and communalism. Several hundred journalists joined the programme holding banners inscribed with a slogan Wake UP Bangladesh to Fight against Militancy and Communalism. Sylhet Press Club secratary Abdur Rashid Renu, Former secratary Somorendro Bishwas Somor, Sirajul Islam, Senior member Abdul Malik Jaka, Former vice-president Bodrudoja Bodor, Ataur Rahman Ata, Treasurer Aftab Uddin, Former Treasurer Khaled Ahmed, Assistant Secratary Sahab Uddin Shihab, Club member Chowdhury Delwar Hossain, Amirul Islam, Ahmed Selim, Kabir Ahmed, Moinul Haq Bulbul, Monjur Ahmed, Gulzar Ahmed, among others, spoke at the human chain programme.
10 shops gutted in Gaibandha
Gaibandha: At least 10 shops were gutted as a fire broke out at Railgate Market in the district town on Monday morning. Azizur Rahman, station officer of Gaibandha Fire Station, said the fire broke out at the market around 7.30am. On information, three fire fighting units from Palashbari and Gobindoganj of the district and Pirganj in Rangpur district rushed to the spot and doused the flame around 9.30am. The fire might have been originated from a burning mosquito coil, added the official. The shops owners claimed that total estimated loss of the fire was around TK 3 crore.a
